Causes

  • Open/short or high resistance in valve solenoid circuit (wiring, connector, pin corrosion)
  • Faulty left-rear load/pressure control valve (stuck, internal contamination or mechanical failure)
  • Faulty ABS/ESP hydraulic modulator or valve body
  • Low brake fluid level or air in the brake circuit
  • Hydraulic leak on left-rear brake circuit
  • Intermittent or lost communication to ABS control module (CAN/bus issues)

Symptoms

  • ABS and/or ESP warning lamp illuminated on dash
  • Reduced or disabled ABS/traction control functionality
  • Longer stopping distances during ABS intervention
  • Uneven braking or vehicle pulling under heavy braking
  • Brake pedal may feel different (pulsation or reduced firmness)
  • Possible brake fluid loss if a hydraulic leak is present

What to check

  • Read all stored/related DTCs and freeze frame data with a capable scan tool
  • Inspect brake fluid level and condition; check for visible leaks at hoses, caliper, modulator
  • Visual inspection of wiring and connector for the left-rear valve (corrosion, damage, pin push-out)
  • Check ABS module fuses, relays, and module power/ground connections
  • Monitor live data for left-rear valve status, commanded duty cycle and any discrepancy flags
  • Perform resistance and continuity checks on the valve solenoid circuit per service manual

Signal parameters

  • Valve solenoid coil resistance should match factory specification (check service manual)
  • Connector supply voltage ~12 V with ignition ON for power pins; ground continuity to chassis
  • Control signal: PWM/duty cycle present on command line when ABS/ESP requests modulation (0–100% duty depending on event)
  • Modulator current draw increases when valve is commanded (monitor with appropriate tool)
  • ABS module reports valve status and commanded pressure values on scan tool (should change during activation)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve and record all DTCs and freeze frame data. Note recent events (braking, wet conditions).
  2. Visually inspect left-rear brake hardware, hydraulic lines, and the modulator connector for leaks, damage, or corrosion.
  3. Check and top up brake fluid if low; repair any external leaks before further testing.
  4. Verify ABS module power and ground at the fuse box and module connector; check related fuses/relays.
  5. With ignition ON (engine off), back-probe the left-rear valve connector and measure coil resistance and supply voltage; compare to factory specification.
  6. Use a scan tool to command the left-rear valve (bidirectional control) and watch live data: confirm the module issues a PWM signal and that the valve/pressure response changes. If no command is observed, suspect module or communication issue.
  7. If valve is not actuating but receives correct command and power, suspect internal valve/mechanical failure; consider bench-testing or replacing the modulator/valve assembly.
  8. If wiring or connector faults are found, repair or replace damaged wiring/connector and retest.
  9. After any repair or replacement, clear codes, bleed the brake system as required, perform a road test and re-scan to confirm the fault is resolved.
  10. If intermittent or communications-related faults persist, inspect CAN bus wiring and other modules for interfering faults; consider ABS module diagnostic bench testing at dealer or specialist.

Likely causes

  • Corroded or loose electrical connector at the modulator
  • Damaged wiring harness near the left-rear wheel or modulator
  • Contaminated brake fluid causing valve sticking
  • Failed valve solenoid inside ABS modulator
  • Blown fuse or poor ground to ABS module

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Left rear load/pressure control valve circuit malfunction detected by ABS/ESP module. Electrical or hydraulic fault preventing proper pressure control at left-rear wheel.
