Chassis Control Module Communication Error

Causes

  • Open or shorted CAN/communication wiring (CAN-H, CAN-L, or shield)
  • Loose, corroded or damaged module connector pins
  • Missing or low module supply voltage or poor ground
  • Faulty chassis control module (internal failure)
  • Bus termination resistor open or incorrect resistance
  • Faulty or incompatible module software (programming mismatch)

Symptoms

  • Chassis-related warnings or lamp illumination (ABS, ESC, traction control)
  • Loss or intermittent loss of stability/traction control functions
  • Vehicle diagnostic tool shows no response or intermittent responses from CCM
  • Stored communication-related DTC(s) and possible limp/limited functions
  • Unusual network activity or multiple modules reporting comms errors

What to check

  • Scan vehicle with a capable diagnostic tool; record all active and historic codes and freeze frame data
  • Verify whether other modules on the same network report communication faults
  • Visually inspect CCM connector(s) and wiring for damage, corrosion, bent pins or water ingress
  • Check module supply fuse(s), measure +12V (or battery voltage) at CCM with key ON, engine OFF
  • Measure CCM ground integrity (resistance to battery negative) and check for multiple ground points
  • Measure CAN bus voltages at the CCM connector with key ON: CAN_H, CAN_L, and differential

Signal parameters

  • CAN bus idle voltages (recessive): CAN_H ≈ 2.5 V, CAN_L ≈ 2.5 V
  • CAN bus dominant voltages: typical CAN_H ≈ 3.5 V, CAN_L ≈ 1.5 V (differential ≈ 2 V)
  • Termination resistance: approximately 60 Ω measured between CAN_H and CAN_L (two 120 Ω terminators in parallel)
  • Common bus data rates: 250 kbps or 500 kbps (verify vehicle-specific rate with scan tool)
  • Expected message frequency: depends on vehicle and module (use OEM data or capture to compare)
  • Supply voltage at CCM: battery voltage with key ON (check for drop under load)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve all DTCs and freeze frame data; note time and vehicle conditions when the code set.
  2. Confirm code is current and whether it reappears after clearing; check for related codes on other modules.
  3. Visually inspect CCM connector and nearby harness for damage, moisture, or corrosion; repair as needed.
  4. Verify fuses and measure supply voltage and grounds at the CCM connector (key ON). Repair poor power/ground.
  5. With ignition ON, measure CAN_H and CAN_L at the CCM connector and at another module on the same bus to compare.
  6. Measure termination resistance between CAN_H and CAN_L with ignition OFF; expect ~60 Ω. Repair if open/incorrect.
  7. Use a scan tool or CAN analyzer to view bus traffic: check for absence of CCM messages, bus errors, or a module flooding the bus.
  8. Perform a wiggle test while monitoring voltages and bus traffic to find intermittent faults; isolate wiring sections as needed.
  9. If wiring and power/ground are good and bus behavior is normal elsewhere, consider reflashing or replacing the CCM per manufacturer procedures.
  10. After repairs or replacement, clear codes, re-run network scans, and road test to confirm the fault does not return. Obtain OEM-specific wiring diagrams and service information if uncertainty remains.

Likely causes

  • Damaged connector or pin(s) at the CCM
  • Open/short on CAN bus between CCM and gateway/ECM
  • Corroded ground or low supply power to the CCM
  • Failed CCM hardware or firmware requiring reflash or replacement
  • Missing/failed termination resistor or connector splice issue

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Chassis Control Module communication lost or interrupted on the vehicle network. The module did not receive expected network messages or did not respond when polled.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 0.5-3.0 hours
