Causes

  • Failed left front wheel speed sensor (internal fault)
  • Open or shorted wiring between the sensor and ABS module
  • Corroded/loose connector or poor pin contact at sensor or harness
  • Damaged or missing tone/reluctor ring on the hub/axle
  • Excessive air gap between sensor and reluctor ring
  • Contamination (metal debris, grease) on sensor or reluctor ring

Symptoms

  • ABS warning lamp illuminated
  • Traction control/stability control warning or disabled
  • ABS/TC intervention unavailable or unexpected activation
  • Possible speedometer or cruise control anomalies (manufacturer dependent)
  • Brake feel changes under ABS activation; pulsation during stops (if ABS engages incorrectly)

What to check

  • Read and record freeze-frame and all stored ABS/ESP codes
  • Visually inspect left front sensor, connector, and wiring harness for damage, corrosion, or contamination
  • Check reluctor/tone ring for missing teeth, heavy corrosion, or debris
  • Wiggle the harness and connector while monitoring live data to look for intermittent changes
  • Measure sensor resistance (if passive) or verify supply and signal (if active) with a multimeter/oscilloscope
  • Backprobe connector and check continuity to the ABS module and for shorts to ground/battery

Signal parameters

  • Passive (magnetic) VR sensor: DC resistance typically in the range ~800–2,000 Ω (manufacturer specific); generates AC voltage when wheel rotates (typical 0.1–2 VAC at moderate speed)
  • Active (Hall or powered) sensor: reference supply commonly ~5 V (some systems use 12 V); output is a pulsed/square waveform 0–(supply) V proportional to wheel speed
  • Signal frequency increases with wheel speed; waveform should be clean and consistent without dropouts
  • Exact resistance, voltages, and waveform shape vary by model — consult OEM data for exact values before replacing components

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve all ABS/ESC codes and note freeze-frame data. Confirm C0031 is current and not historical.
  2. Visually inspect left front wheel speed sensor, connector, wiring loom, and tone/reluctor ring for obvious damage, contamination, or missing teeth.
  3. With key on and engine off, disconnect the sensor connector and measure sensor resistance (for passive sensors) or check supply voltage at the connector (for active sensors). Compare to OEM spec or the typical ranges listed.
  4. With wheel lifted and secured, rotate wheel by hand while measuring sensor output with a multimeter (AC volts for VR) or oscilloscope (preferred) to observe waveform. Look for consistent amplitude and frequency without dropouts.
  5. Backprobe the harness at the ABS module or use continuity tester to confirm wiring integrity between sensor connector and module pins. Check for shorts to ground or battery.
  6. Perform a wiggle test on the harness and connector while monitoring live wheel speed data to detect intermittent faults.
  7. Inspect/replace the reluctor ring or correct air gap if bent, missing teeth, or excessive clearance is found. Repair any damaged wiring or connectors (replace pins/terminals as needed).
  8. If sensor and wiring check good but fault persists, consult OEM wiring diagrams and test/replace ABS module or control unit as a last step.
  9. After repairs, clear codes, perform a calibrated road test or diagnostic scan while driving to confirm the left front wheel speed signal is present and the code does not return.

Likely causes

  • Damaged/contaminated sensor
  • Connector corrosion or wiring open/short
  • Reluctor ring damage or excessive air gap
