Causes

What to check

  • Scan tool: read freeze frame and live data (wheel speed sensors) to confirm right-front wheel speed value vs others.
  • Visual inspection of right-front sensor, connector and wiring for damage, corrosion, contamination or chafing. Check wheel hub/tone ring for missing or damaged teeth.
  • Backprobe connector with key on/engine off to verify reference supply (if active sensor) and ground continuity to module. Compare with factory values.
  • Measure sensor resistance (if passive magnetic type) and compare to specifications.
  • Wiggle-test harness and connectors while watching live data for intermittent behaviour.
  • Use an oscilloscope or multimeter to observe sensor waveform while spinning wheel (jack support or road test with scan tool).

Signal parameters

  • Passive (magnetic) sensor: DC resistance typically in the hundreds to low thousands of ohms (manufacturer-specific). Produces an AC voltage whose amplitude increases with wheel speed (no fixed DC voltage). Verify against factory spec.
  • Active (Hall/LS) sensor: usually has a reference supply (typically 5 V) and returns a square/pulse signal (approx. 0–5 V) with frequency proportional to speed. Check for stable reference and signal.
  • Typical expected waveform: clean alternating pulses corresponding to tone ring teeth; missing pulses or distorted waveform indicate tone ring or sensor issue.
  • If replacing/diagnosing, always confirm exact resistance, supply and signal specs from the Land Rover workshop manual for the specific model/year.

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect diagnostic scanner and read ABS/traction codes and live data for all wheel speed sensors. Note any freeze-frame data.
  2. Perform visual inspection of right-front wheel area: sensor, connector, harness routing, and tone ring. Repair obvious damage.
  3. With key on, backprobe sensor connector: verify reference voltage (if active) and ground continuity to ABS module. If no reference, check wiring and module fuses/grounds.
  4. Measure sensor resistance (for passive) or check output voltage (for active) against factory values. Replace sensor if out of spec.
  5. Use an oscilloscope (preferred) or a multimeter to observe the sensor waveform while spinning the wheel by hand or during a controlled road test. Look for consistent pulses without dropout or distortion.
  6. Perform wiggle test on harness/connectors while monitoring live wheel speed data to detect intermittent faults. Repair wiring or replace connector as required.
  7. If wiring and sensor check good but code persists, inspect tone/reluctor ring for damage, missing teeth, heavy rust or metal debris; repair or replace hub/tone ring as needed.
  8. If all hardware and wiring test good, consider replacing the ABS module or performing module reprogramming only after confirming CAN/communication and following manufacturer guidance.
  9. After repairs, clear codes and perform road test with scanner to confirm proper operation and that C0034 does not return.
