Traction Active Indicator (Subfault)

Causes

  • Open or short in indicator lamp/LED circuit
  • Faulty instrument cluster lamp driver or LED
  • Poor power or ground to instrument cluster or traction control module
  • Intermittent or failed CAN/serial communication between ABS/ESP module and cluster/BCM
  • Corroded/loose connector or wiring harness damage
  • Related module software error or calibration issue

Symptoms

  • Traction Active indicator lamp illuminated, flashing, or not behaving normally
  • Associated ABS/ESP or traction-control warning lamp may also be present
  • Driver display message related to traction control or indicator
  • Possible reduced or altered traction-control messages or status feedback
  • No obvious mechanical effect on vehicle performance in some cases (indicator-only)

What to check

  • Scan ABS/ESP, BCM and instrument cluster for stored and pending DTCs; record freeze frame data
  • Visually inspect connectors, wiring, and shields at cluster, ABS/ESP module and BCM for corrosion, damage or loose pins
  • Check fuses and power supply to instrument cluster and ABS/ESP modules
  • Verify adequate ground(s) for cluster and chassis control modules
  • Check CAN bus continuity and voltage levels, and for other communication errors
  • Confirm indicator lamp or LED operation directly at cluster (bulb/LED test)

Signal parameters

  • Instrument cluster supply voltage (typically battery voltage ± 0.5 V)
  • Cluster ground continuity (low ohms to chassis)
  • CAN High/Low idle voltages (~2.5 V differential, ~2.5 V each to ground when idle)
  • Wheel speed sensor frequency/voltage while rolling (per service manual)
  • Lamp driver output voltage to indicator (on/off states)
  • Module wake/response on diagnostic scan tool (response time and present modules)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a capable scan tool and read/record all stored and pending codes from ABS/ESP, BCM and instrument cluster. Note freeze frame/conditions.
  2. Clear codes and attempt to reproduce the fault. Observe if C0084 returns and under what conditions.
  3. Visually inspect relevant harnesses and connectors (cluster, ABS/ESP module, BCM). Repair any physical damage or corrosion.
  4. Verify power and ground to the instrument cluster and traction control module with a DMM. Repair poor connections.
  5. Test the traction indicator circuit: command the lamp via the scan tool (if supported) or observe cluster behavior during controlled inputs.
  6. Check CAN bus for errors: use a scope or CAN diagnostic tool to verify physical layer voltages and traffic. Repair bus faults or replace terminated components as needed.
  7. Verify related sensor inputs (wheel speed, steering angle, yaw) are within expected ranges; intermittent sensor faults can set subfaults.
  8. If wiring and power/ground are good but fault persists, follow module bench/test procedures in service literature. Reflash or replace instrument cluster or affected module only after confirming fault source.
  9. After repairs, clear codes and perform a road test to confirm the fault does not return and that indicator behavior is normal.

Likely causes

  • Damaged connector or pin corrosion at cluster, ABS/ESP module or BCM
  • Failed instrument cluster lamp driver or LED
  • Faulty ground at instrument cluster or chassis ground point
  • CAN bus interruption (open/short/high-resistance) between modules
  • Intermittent wiring short to power or ground on indicator circuit
