Causes

  • Open or damaged wiring in left-rear solenoid circuit
  • Corroded or loose connector at the wheel solenoid or ABS modulator
  • Short to battery voltage (power feed) on the solenoid control wire
  • Failed left-rear solenoid coil (high internal resistance or open)
  • Faulty ABS/traction control module or driver transistor
  • Blown fuse or poor ground related to ABS modulator circuit

Symptoms

  • ABS warning lamp (ABS/Traction Control light) illuminated
  • Possible stability/traction control warning messages
  • Reduced or disabled ABS operation on left-rear wheel; longer stopping distance under some conditions
  • Brake pedal feel may be normal at low speed but ABS may not engage when expected
  • Stored DTC C0588 (may be accompanied by other ABS/traction codes)

What to check

  • Use an OBD-II/scan tool to read and record all ABS/chassis codes and freeze frame data
  • Visually inspect left-rear wheel area wiring, connector, and solenoid for damage, corrosion, moisture, or disconnection
  • Inspect harness routing from left rear to ABS modulator for chafing, pinches, or prior repair splice points
  • Check ABS-related fuses and ground points for security and corrosion
  • With ignition ON (engine OFF), back-probe the solenoid connector and measure voltage at relevant pins
  • Measure solenoid coil resistance at the wheel connector (with harness unplugged)

Signal parameters

  • Vehicle system voltage: nominal 12–14.5 V (key ON, engine running)
  • Solenoid coil resistance (typical range): approx. 5–40 Ω (manufacturer-specific — consult service manual). An open/infinite resistance indicates a failed coil.
  • Control circuit behavior: normally the module either grounds the low-side to energize or uses PWM; expected at control pin when OFF: near battery voltage (~11–13 V); when ON/grounded: near 0–1 V (or pulsed between 0 and battery when PWM).
  • Current draw when energized: typically 0.2–2 A depending on coil resistance and design. Compare to shop manual spec.

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Record DTCs and related codes using a scan tool. Note freeze-frame data and clear codes to confirm reappearance.
  2. Visual inspection: inspect left rear wheel hub, solenoid connector, and wiring for physical damage, corrosion, or water intrusion.
  3. Check fuses and chassis grounds related to ABS/controller. Repair corrosion and tighten grounds.
  4. With ignition ON, engine OFF, back-probe the solenoid connector at the wheel and measure voltage on the control and supply pins. With no command, supply should show battery voltage; control should be battery voltage if circuit is high.
  5. Use scan tool to command the left-rear solenoid (if tool supports active tests) while monitoring voltage. If the module commands and harness voltage does not change to near 0 V (or expected PWM), suspect short to battery or open driver.
  6. Unplug the wheel harness at the solenoid and measure coil resistance across solenoid terminals. Compare to spec. Infinite or very high resistance indicates a bad solenoid.
  7. Check continuity between the solenoid control pin and the ABS module connector. Inspect for short to battery (measure voltage with harness connected and solenoid unplugged).
  8. Wiggle harness and connectors while monitoring voltage and live data to detect intermittent faults.
  9. If wiring and solenoid check good, test or replace ABS module or perform bench diagnostics per manufacturer procedures. Consider swapping identical solenoid outputs (if service manual allows) to see if fault follows harness/solenoid or stays with module output.
  10. After repairs, clear codes and road test; verify no recurrence and that ABS functions normally.

Likely causes

  • Connector pin corrosion or pushed-out terminal at left rear wheel or at ABS modulator
  • Broken conductor in harness near wheel or body harness chafe point
  • Short to constant 12V on the solenoid control conductor
  • High-resistance solenoid coil (partial open) or completely open coil
  • Failed output driver inside ABS module

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Left rear solenoid control circuit is reading high voltage or open/high resistance. ABS/traction control may disable left-rear control until fault is fixed.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 0.5–2.5 hours
