Causes

  • Open or shorted wiring between control module and front axle disconnect actuator

What to check

  • Read and record freeze-frame and live data with a scan tool; note related codes
  • Visual inspection of actuator, harness, connectors and boots for corrosion, damage or moisture
  • Check relevant fuse(s) and relay(s) for continuity and correct operation
  • Measure battery voltage at the actuator connector with key on / command active
  • Measure resistance of actuator (with connector disconnected) per manufacturer spec
  • Perform wiggle test on wiring while monitoring voltages or live data for intermittent faults

Signal parameters

  • Typical supply voltage to actuator: ~12 V (battery voltage) when commanded
  • No-command voltage: either battery voltage (held) or near 0 V depending on design
  • Actuator coil/motor resistance: generally low ohms to hundreds of ohms (manufacturer spec required)
  • Control signal may be steady or PWM; monitor with scan tool or oscilloscope for expected duty cycle
  • Ground circuit resistance: should be

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a scan tool and confirm C0632 plus any related codes. Record live data and attempt front axle engage while watching parameters.
  2. Visually inspect the actuator, connector, and wiring for corrosion, bent pins, water intrusion, chafing or damage. Repair as needed.
  3. Verify power and ground at the actuator connector. With key on and command active, measure for battery voltage on the power terminal and low resistance to ground on the ground terminal.
  4. Disconnect the actuator and measure its resistance. Compare to service specification; open or shorted readings indicate a bad actuator.
  5. If actuator resistance is within spec, apply fused 12 V directly (bench or vehicle) to the actuator to verify mechanical operation (observe movement, hear motor/solenoid). Use caution and protect against shorting.
  6. Inspect and test fuses and relay(s) that feed the actuator circuit. Replace if faulty and retest.
  7. If wiring/power/actuator checks good, backprobe the control module output while commanding the actuator. Check for expected voltage or PWM signal. No output suggests module fault or communication issue.
  8. Perform continuity checks from the module connector to the actuator connector to detect opens/shorts. Repair any damaged wiring and retest.
  9. After repairs, clear codes, cycle the ignition and operate the 4WD engage/disengage several times. Road test and re-scan to confirm the issue is resolved.
  10. If fault persists with correct wiring, power, ground, and actuator operation, consider module diagnostics or replacement per manufacturer procedure.

  • Corroded or disconnected connector at the front axle disconnect actuator
  • Broken wire or internal short in the harness to the actuator
  • Failed actuator (burned motor or stuck solenoid)
  • Faulty fuse or relay supplying the actuator circuit
  • Poor ground at the actuator or module
