Causes

What to check

  • Read and record freeze-frame data and all stored ABS codes with a scan tool; clear and re-scan after test drive
  • Monitor live wheel speed sensor data for left front while spinning wheel or during road test; look for dropouts, noise, or mismatched frequency
  • Visually inspect sensor and tone ring for damage, missing teeth, rust, or heavy contamination
  • Inspect connector for corrosion, bent pins, water ingress, and ensure tight fit; wiggle connector while observing live data
  • Inspect wiring along chassis/suspension for chafing, pinches, or breaks; flex harness while monitoring sensor data
  • Measure sensor resistance (for VR sensors) and compare to manufacturer spec; measure supply/reference and ground for Hall sensors

Signal parameters

  • Hall-effect sensor: 0–5 V square wave, switches with wheel rotation; reference supply typically ~5 V; signal frequency increases with wheel speed
  • Variable reluctance (VR) sensor: AC sine-like waveform with amplitude rising with wheel speed; no DC supply — amplitude depends on rotor speed
  • Typical Hall sensor supply: ~5 V (some systems may use 12 V); pull-up to 5 V on signal line when idle
  • Typical VR sensor resistance (example range): ~100–2000 ohms depending on vehicle — consult vehicle-specific spec
  • Expected signal: clean, continuous pulses without dropouts or large baseline shifts; frequency and amplitude proportional to wheel speed

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve all ABS codes and freeze-frame data. Note whether code is logged as intermittent and any related codes.
  2. Clear codes and perform a controlled road test while monitoring left front wheel speed data. Try maneuvers that reproduce the fault (turning, bumps, braking).
  3. Visually inspect left front sensor, tone ring, and harness. Repair or replace any obvious damage or contaminated components.
  4. Back-probe sensor connector and monitor signal with scan tool, digital multimeter, or scope while spinning the wheel by hand or during a drive. Look for dropouts, noise, or loss of signal.
  5. Wiggle the harness and connector while monitoring live data to reproduce intermittent behavior. Check for loose clips that allow chafing against moving parts.
  6. Measure sensor resistance (VR) and compare to spec. Check Hall sensor supply/reference and output voltages with key on and with wheel spinning.
  7. If signal is poor at connector but good at sensor, repair wiring/connector (clean contacts, reseal, replace damaged section). If signal bad at sensor, replace the sensor.
  8. Inspect tone ring for missing teeth, heavy rust or metal buildup; clean or replace tone ring if damaged. Ensure correct sensor gap and secure mounting.
  9. After repairs, clear codes and re-test to confirm the C0655 does not return and that ABS/traction operate normally.
  10. If wiring, connector, and sensor check good but intermittent persists, test module grounds and power; consider module fault and consult manufacturer procedures.

Likely causes

  • Intermittent connector contact because of corrosion, debris, or water intrusion
  • Wiring chafed at a suspension pivot or near a steering knuckle causing intermittent short or open when turning or going over bumps
  • Loose or damaged tone ring (cracked, bent, or missing teeth) producing erratic pulses
  • Sensor contaminated with metal shavings or heavy rust that causes irregular amplitude or frequency
  • Sensor mounting bolt loose or sensor moved out of correct gap
  • Intermittent internal failure of Hall/VR sensor elements
