Power grid - right unfolding

Causes
- Open or short in right unfolding wiring harness
- Corroded or loose connector at actuator or control module
- Failed right-side unfolding motor/actuator
- Faulty position/limit switch or sensor on right mechanism
- Blown fuse or faulty relay supplying the unfolding circuit
- Control module hardware or software fault
Symptoms
- Right-side unfolding action does not operate or stops part way
- Asymmetric operation (left operates, right does not)
- Slow or laboured right unfolding movement
- Audible clicking or high current noise from actuator area
- Warning message or lamp on instrument cluster related to roof/unfolding
- DTC C1004 stored in related control module
What to check
- Read stored and pending codes with a capable scan tool; note freeze-frame/related codes
- Visually inspect right unfolding actuator, linkages and surrounding area for damage or obstruction
- Inspect connectors and wiring for corrosion, pins pushed out, broken wires and secure grounds
- Check fuses and relays for the unfolding circuit; verify fuse continuity
- Measure vehicle battery/resting voltage and cranking voltage to ensure adequate supply
- Observe live data/actuator command and feedback values while commanding the system
Signal parameters
- Battery supply voltage expected: ~12.0–14.6 V (engine running 13.5–14.6 V)
- Actuator supply during command: near battery voltage (approx 9–14 V) when activated
- Actuator ground continuity: low ohms to chassis ground
- Position/limit sensor feedback: typically 0.5–4.5 V or discrete switch change when moved to end positions
- Motor current draw: rises under load and may reach several amps; stall current will be significantly higher (monitor with clamp meter)
- Control module command: PWM or switched feed — watch for expected duty cycle or on/off command in live data
Diagnostic algorithm
- Connect a diagnostic scan tool, read and record C1004 and any related codes. Note freeze-frame data and system state when fault occurred.
- Attempt normal unfolding operation while observing live data and commands. Confirm whether command is issued by control module and whether actuator provides feedback.
- Visually inspect right-side harness, connectors and actuator for damage, corrosion or poor mating. Wiggle harness while commanding to check for intermittent faults.
- Verify battery/resting voltage and check supply fuse/relay for the right unfolding circuit. Replace if blown or faulty.
- Back-probe the actuator connector during a commanded cycle: confirm presence of supply voltage, ground switching/PWM and any feedback signal. Compare to the left/right known-good side if available.
- Measure actuator resistance with ignition off; check for near-zero short or very high open-circuit resistance indicating motor/actuator fault.
- Use a clamp ammeter to measure current during operation or when applying bench power. Excessive current suggests mechanical jam or seized motor; no current suggests open circuit.
- If wiring and supply are good, apply controlled bench power to the actuator to verify movement and detect mechanical binding. Use suitable workshop support and safety procedures when powering actuators.
- Repair or replace faulty wiring, connector, fuse/relay, actuator or sensor as indicated by tests. If control module communication or internal fault is suspected, follow manufacturer procedures for module reprogramming or replacement.
- After repairs clear codes and re-test cycles several times to confirm correct operation and no recurrence of C1004.
Likely causes
- Connector corrosion or poor ground at right actuator
- Motor/actuator internal failure or high internal resistance
- Wiring damage (chafing, break) in right unfolding circuit
- Mechanical jam or seized mechanism on right side
Fault status
Status
Control module detected abnormal or missing signal from the right unfolding power circuit. The right unfolding actuation may be disabled until the fault is repaired.
Repair difficulty: Medium
Diagnostic time: 1.0 - 2.5 hours
