Causes

  • Damaged or failed right front wheel speed sensor
  • Open, shorted or chafed wiring between sensor and ABS/ESC module
  • Corroded, loose or contaminated connector at sensor or module
  • Damaged or missing tone ring (reluctor) or magnetic debris on tone ring
  • Wheel bearing or hub damage affecting sensor gap/position
  • Faulty ABS/ESC control module or poor ground to module

Symptoms

  • ABS and/or ESP/traction control warning light illuminated
  • Reduced or disabled ABS/ESC/traction control functionality
  • Intermittent ABS activation or unexpected ABS engagement
  • Speedometer or cruise control issues (less common)
  • One wheel shows inconsistent or zero speed on a diagnostic scan tool

What to check

  • Use a scan tool to read stored codes and live wheel speed values for all four wheels
  • Visually inspect right front sensor, connector and wiring for damage, corrosion or contamination
  • Spin the right front wheel and observe wheel speed signal on scan tool — compare to other wheels
  • Measure sensor resistance (for passive sensors) and compare to manufacturer spec
  • Check sensor supply/reference voltage and ground at the connector (for active sensors)
  • Inspect tone/reluctor ring for missing teeth, cracks, heavy rust or metal debris

Signal parameters

  • Passive (variable reluctance) sensor: DC resistance typically ~800–1500 Ω (vehicle-specific) and AC output that increases with wheel speed (tens of mV to volts)
  • Active (Hall/electronic) sensor: typically 3 wires (power, ground, signal), supply ~5 V (or 12 V on some systems). Signal: square/sine pulses ~0–5 V (or ~0.5–4.5 V) with frequency proportional to wheel speed
  • Typical frequency: increases with wheel RPM (example ~50–2000 Hz depending on speed and tone ring tooth count)
  • Expected behavior: all four wheel speed channels should show similar proportional speed values when rolling the vehicle straight

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Safety first: secure vehicle with parking brake, chock wheels or use lift and support with jack stands as required
  2. Connect a capable scan tool. Read freeze frame and stored codes; record live wheel speed values for all wheels at rest and while rotating the right front wheel by hand or during a short road test
  3. Clear codes, re-run test to verify persistence
  4. Visually inspect the right front sensor, tone ring, hub and wiring for damage, contamination or missing teeth. Clean lightly if contaminated
  5. Unplug the sensor connector and inspect pins for corrosion/looseness. Reconnect and check for secure fit
  6. Measure sensor resistance (for 2-wire passive sensors) and compare to spec. Replace if out of range or open/short
  7. For 3-wire active sensors, backprobe connector: verify reference voltage and ground present with ignition on, then observe signal while spinning wheel with oscilloscope or multimeter capable of frequency/voltage measurements
  8. Perform a wiggle test on wiring and connector while monitoring live data to find intermittent faults
  9. If sensor and wiring check good but no valid signal, check continuity from connector to ABS module and inspect module grounds and power rails
  10. If tone ring damaged or missing teeth, or wheel bearing excessive play, repair or replace and retest
  11. After repair or replacement, clear codes and perform a road test/functional test to confirm correct operation and that the fault does not return

Likely causes

  • Sensor damaged or contaminated (most common)
  • Connector corrosion or poor contact at the sensor
  • Broken/chaffed wiring harness near hub or steering knuckle
  • Tone ring cracked, missing teeth, or heavy rust/debris affecting signal
