Causes

  • Open or short circuit in sensor wiring
  • Corroded, loose or contaminated sensor connector
  • Failed rear axle speed or pressure sensor
  • Faulty reference voltage or ground at the sensor
  • Damage to tone ring, reluctor or sensor mounting (mechanical)
  • Water/contamination ingress into sensor or hub

Symptoms

  • ABS, traction control or stability control warning lamp illuminated
  • Possible reduced or disabled ABS/TC/ESC functionality (limp or degraded mode)
  • Brake/traction system warnings or messages on instrument cluster
  • Irregular or incorrect wheel speed readings seen in diagnostic scan tool
  • Unusual noise or vibration if tone ring/wheel bearing is damaged

What to check

  • Read stored codes and freeze-frame data with an OEM-capable scan tool; note related codes
  • Visually inspect sensor, connector, wiring harness and tone ring/reluctor for damage, corrosion or contamination
  • Check for water ingress or grease buildup at the hub connector
  • Verify fuses and power supply circuits to the ABS/axle sensor
  • Measure sensor reference voltage and ground at the connector with key ON engine OFF
  • Measure sensor signal while rotating the axle/wheel by hand or on a lift (multimeter or oscilloscope preferred)

Signal parameters

  • Reference voltage typically ~5 V supply (verify with factory data)
  • Signal type: wheel speed sensors produce either a variable analog (0–5 V) or a pulse/frequency output (Hall/VR type) — pressure sensors usually 0–5 V analog
  • At rest: speed sensor frequency ~0 Hz / pressure sensor a stable idle voltage — signal should change smoothly with wheel/axle rotation or pressure change
  • Open circuit: signal reads high impedance or no voltage change; short to ground: signal ~0 V
  • Use oscilloscope to verify clean square/pulse waveform for Hall sensors or sinusoidal for variable reluctance; frequency should increase with speed

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect OEM scan tool, record C1042 and any related codes and freeze-frame data. Note whether code is current or historic.
  2. Perform visual inspection of rear axle sensor(s), connector(s) and harness for damage, corrosion, water ingress or missing fasteners; repair as needed.
  3. Check power and ground at the sensor connector with key ON. Compare to manufacturer reference voltages; repair supply faults before replacing sensor.
  4. Backprobe sensor signal and reference with oscilloscope or multimeter. Rotate wheel/axle and observe signal behavior: stable, proportional signal expected. If no signal or erratic, continue.
  5. Inspect tone ring/reluctor and wheel bearing for mechanical damage that could prevent proper sensing; repair/replace as required.
  6. Check continuity and resistance of the sensor wiring to ECU; look for shorts to ground or power. Perform wiggle testing to find intermittent faults.
  7. If wiring and supply are good but signal is out of spec, replace the suspect sensor. After replacement clear codes and perform road test and live-data verification.
  8. If fault persists after sensor and wiring replacement, investigate ABS/ESP control module inputs, internal faults, or consult detailed factory diagnostics for module testing.

Likely causes

  • Damaged wiring harness near rear axle (chafing, rodent damage)
  • Corroded connector at wheel hub due to moisture
  • Faulty sensor element (electrical/pressure diaphragm failure)
  • Missing or damaged tone ring/reluctor on axle/wheel
  • Poor ground or blown fuse supplying sensor
  • Contaminated hydraulic/pneumatic line if the code refers to a pressure sensor
