Causes

  • Faulty right rear wheel speed sensor
  • Damaged or corroded sensor connector or wiring harness
  • Broken or missing tone/reluctor ring (wheel, hub or axle)
  • Poor ground or power supply to the sensor
  • Contaminated sensor (metal filings, grease) or magnetic debris
  • Intermittent connection due to movement or corrosion

Symptoms

  • ABS warning lamp illuminated
  • Traction control/stability control warning light may be on or functions reduced
  • ABS or traction control may be disabled or operate incorrectly
  • Irregular or zero speed reading for right rear wheel in scan tool/live data
  • Possible noise or vibration from affected wheel in rare cases

What to check

  • Connect a diagnostic scanner, read/record freeze frame and freeze DTC history
  • Inspect right rear wheel area: sensor, connector, harness, and tone wheel for visible damage, contamination, missing teeth or excessive air gap
  • Visually inspect connector pins for corrosion, bent pins or water ingress
  • Check for stored related codes for other wheels or communication faults
  • Backprobe the sensor connector and check for reference power and ground (if active sensor) with ignition on
  • Measure sensor resistance (for passive sensors) with multimeter and compare to specification

Signal parameters

  • Passive (magnetic) sensor: DC resistance typically in the hundreds to low thousands of ohms (manufacturer spec required) — open circuit or very high/low reading indicates fault
  • Active (Hall/variable reluctance with electronics) sensor: typically has a reference supply (often 5V or ignition-switched) and outputs a pulsed voltage; expected output is a square or sinusoidal-like waveform whose amplitude and frequency increase with wheel speed (approx. 0.5–4.5 V typical for many systems)
  • With wheel rotated at low speed (hand spin) you should see a clean, repeatable waveform on an oscilloscope; no waveform or excessive noise indicates sensor or tone wheel problem

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Read and record all diagnostic trouble codes and freeze frame data with an OBD/ABS scan tool
  2. Visually inspect right rear sensor, wiring, and tone ring for damage, debris, corrosion or excessive air gap; clean if contaminated
  3. Clear the code and perform a low-speed road test while monitoring live wheel speed data to confirm fault behavior
  4. With vehicle safely supported and wheel removed, disconnect sensor and inspect connector pins; check for corrosion, bent pins or water intrusion
  5. Measure sensor resistance (if passive) and compare to spec; for active sensors check reference voltage and ground at connector with ignition on
  6. Rotate wheel by hand while observing scan tool/oscilloscope waveform at sensor; perform wiggle tests on harness to detect intermittent faults
  7. Check continuity from sensor connector to ABS module and for shorts to ground or battery using multimeter
  8. If wiring and connectors are good but no proper signal, replace the right rear wheel speed sensor; retest and clear codes
  9. If new sensor does not restore signal and wiring checks good, consider ABS module input fault and consult manufacturer diagnostic procedures before replacing module

Likely causes

  • Corroded/damaged wiring or connector at the right rear wheel
  • Contaminated or mechanically damaged sensor
  • Physical damage or missing teeth on the tone/reluctor ring
  • Failed wheel speed sensor element

Fault status

⚠️ Status
