What to check

  • Backprobe signal wire and monitor voltage or data while tapping/moving vehicle to see changes
  • Check for TSBs or software updates for the control module

Signal parameters

  • Sensor supply: typically ignition-switched 5 V or vehicle-specific reference voltage (verify with factory data)
  • At 0 g (no vertical acceleration) many accelerometers show a mid-scale voltage (e.g., ~Vref/2) or neutral digital output; signal should change smoothly with vertical input
  • Signal noise should be low; intermittent spikes, flatline or open/short to rail indicate fault
  • Typical wiring: 3 wires (Vref, signal, ground) for analog sensors or digital bus/SPI/CAN/ SENT for smart sensors — confirm type before measuring
  • Expected resistance on harness (sensor disconnected) usually low between signal and ground when specified; check factory specs

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a capable Land Rover diagnostic / scan tool. Read and log C110A and any related codes. Note freeze frame and live data.
  2. Clear the code, then re-run the vehicle to see if the code returns and under what conditions.
  3. Visually inspect the front vertical acceleration sensor, mount and connector. Repair any obvious damage/corrosion.
  4. With ignition ON, backprobe the sensor connector: confirm reference voltage present, good ground and signal output. Compare to manufacturer values.
  5. Gently tap the sensor mounting (or lift/lower suspension slightly if safe) while watching live signal. Signal should respond smoothly without dropouts.
  6. Perform wiggle test on the harness and connector while monitoring data and DTC status to find intermittent faults.
  7. If wiring, connectors and supply are good, swap with a known-good identical sensor (if available) or substitute with a bench-tested unit and re-check.
  8. Check for control module updates or calibration procedures. If sensor and wiring check out but fault persists, test or replace the receiving control module per factory diagnostics.
  9. After repair, clear codes and perform road test and functional checks of affected systems to confirm repair.
