Causes

  • Damaged or corroded wiring or connector (open, short to ground or battery, high resistance)
  • Faulty torque or hydraulic pressure sensor
  • Low or contaminated hydraulic fluid / pump failure (if sensor measures system pressure)
  • Intermittent CAN or module communication fault
  • Poor ground or supply voltage to sensor or module
  • Module software or calibration fault

Symptoms

  • ABS, ESP (DSC) or power steering warning lamp illuminated
  • Reduced or lost steering assist / heavier steering feel
  • ESP/ABS intervention, reduced engine torque or limp/limited functionality
  • Intermittent or persistent fault message in instrument cluster
  • Possible steering torque steering feel inconsistency or pulsation

What to check

  • Read live DTCs and freeze frame data with a JLR-compatible scan tool; record related codes (ABS, EPAS, CAN)
  • Visually inspect sensor connector and wiring for damage, corrosion or pin backout
  • Check battery voltage and chassis grounds; ensure stable supply during tests
  • Monitor live data for torque and pressure sensor values while turning wheel or applying brakes
  • Wiggle test wiring while monitoring live data to reproduce fault
  • Check hydraulic fluid level and condition if applicable; inspect pump/supply for abnormal noise

Signal parameters

  • Typical sensor supply: 5 V reference (verify with manufacturer spec)
  • Typical sensor signal: ~2.5 V nominal (±1.0–1.5 V) for torque/pressure sensors using ratiometric output — verify exact range in service data
  • Open/short conditions: signal near 0 V (short to ground) or near reference/battery voltage (short to Vb)
  • Digital/CAN: related torque/pressure values may be broadcast as CAN messages — verify message presence and plausibility with OEM tool
  • Noisy or intermittent waveform on oscilloscope indicates wiring or sensor internal failure

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Use an OEM diagnostic tool to read all stored codes and related live data; note freeze frame conditions.
  2. Clear the code and perform a controlled road/bench test to see if the code returns and under what conditions (steering input, braking, load).
  3. Visually inspect sensor, connector and harness routing for damage, chafing, pin corrosion, water ingress or rodent damage.
  4. Verify supply and ground at the sensor connector with ignition ON (measure reference voltage and ground continuity to chassis).
  5. Probe the signal wire while operating steering/brakes and observe voltage pattern; compare to expected centre voltage and response (use oscilloscope for detail).
  6. Perform wiggle tests on harness and connector while watching live data; check for intermittent faults.
  7. If wiring and supply are good, disconnect sensor and measure its resistance/outputs per service manual; replace sensor if out of spec.
  8. If sensor replacement does not clear the fault, check upstream module inputs/outputs and CAN communication lines; check module power/grounds.
  9. Inspect hydraulic system (if applicable): check fluid level, leaks, and pump operation; measure system pressure if service data available.
  10. After repairs, clear codes and perform calibration/relearn procedures required by the manufacturer; road test to verify fault does not return.
  11. If fault persists after component replacement and wiring verified, consider module reflash or replacement per dealer procedures.

Likely causes

  • Connector contamination or loose terminal at sensor or ABS/EPAS module
  • Broken or chafed harness in steering column or near suspension/engine bay
  • Failed sensor element (internal short/open or out-of-spec output)
  • Low system hydraulic pressure or failing pump causing out-of-range sensor reading
  • Module fault or corrupted software requiring reflash

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Torque / pressure sensor fault detected. System may operate in degraded mode — reduced steering assist/ESP/ABS function. Service recommended.
