Causes

  • Burnt or open bulb/LED lamp element
  • Blown fuse or faulty relay for stop lamps
  • Open or shorted wiring in right rear lamp circuit (connector, harness damage)
  • Poor or corroded ground at lamp or chassis
  • Corroded/dirty lamp socket or connector pins
  • Faulty body control module (BCM) or lamp driver output

Symptoms

  • Right rear brake/stop light does not illuminate when brake pedal pressed
  • Intermittent operation of right stoplamp (works sometimes)
  • Brake warning or bulb-out indicator on dash (if equipped)
  • Possible other body lighting or CAN warnings if BCM detects driver fault

What to check

  • Verify customer complaint by activating brakes and visually inspecting right rear lamp
  • Scan vehicle with appropriate diagnostic tool and read/record C111A and any related codes
  • Inspect right rear lamp assembly for burned filament, moisture ingress, or damage
  • Check relevant fuses and relays for continuity and correct seating
  • Visually inspect wiring and connector for corrosion, bent pins, broken wires, or aftermarket splices
  • Backprobe lamp connector and check for voltage/ground while brake pedal is pressed

Signal parameters

  • Expected voltage at lamp + terminal with pedal pressed: approximately 11–14 V (vehicle battery voltage)
  • Expected voltage at lamp - (ground) with pedal pressed: near 0 V (ground) or continuity to chassis ground
  • Bulb filament resistance (incandescent stop lamp): typically 1–5 Ω when cold (varies by bulb type)
  • LED stop lamp: low current draw (mA to
  • BCM/lamp driver output state: command active (depending on scan tool: ON/1)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a diagnostic scanner, read and record C111A and any other stored codes; note freeze frame/live data if available
  2. Verify operation: press brake pedal and observe right stoplamp behavior; confirm left lamp operation for comparison
  3. Inspect right stoplamp bulb or LED module and socket; replace bulb with known good if incandescent and re-test
  4. Check fuses/relays related to stop lamps; replace if blown and re-test
  5. Backprobe the lamp connector while an assistant presses the brake pedal: confirm presence of +12 V (or switched signal) on the feed pin and good ground on ground pin
  6. If no voltage at lamp feed, trace wiring toward BCM: inspect connectors, splice points and harness for damage; perform continuity test between lamp feed and BCM output with ignition off
  7. If voltage present but lamp does not light, test lamp socket ground continuity to chassis; repair poor ground
  8. If intermittent, perform wiggle test along harness and connectors while observing scanner/live data for changes
  9. If wiring and lamp/grounds are good but module output is not switching, check BCM power/ground/fuse circuits and related communication lines; replace BCM only after confirming upstream supplies and wiring are good
  10. Clear codes and test drive/operate brakes to confirm the fault does not return

Likely causes

  • Failed/right stoplamp bulb or LED module
  • Corroded or loose connector at right rear lamp cluster
  • Open/shorted wire between right rear lamp and BCM (common at hinge/bolt points)
  • Bad ground at lamp cluster or chassis point
  • Blown fuse protecting stoplamp circuit

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Fault detected in right stoplamp circuit — lamp not responding or circuit parameters outside expected range; stored by vehicle module for right rear stoplamp.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 0.5-2 hours
