Causes

  • Open, short or high resistance in the sensor signal wiring
  • Corroded, loose or water-damaged connector at the sensor or control module
  • Failed secondary (redundant) transducer/sensor
  • Faulty supply (reference) voltage or ground to the sensor
  • Internal fault in the control module input circuit
  • Software/calibration error or missing sensor coding

Symptoms

  • Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) or warning light for the affected system (ABS/ESP/steering/brake, etc.)
  • Reduced or degraded function of the system using the transducer (eg. limited stability control or steering assist)
  • Diagnostic Trouble Code C1289 stored (with possible related codes)
  • Intermittent or permanent loss of the related system functionality
  • Possible limp/reduced-performance mode depending on system

What to check

  • Read all stored DTCs and freeze frame data with a capable scan tool; note related codes and events
  • Visually inspect sensor and module connectors for corrosion, bent pins, moisture, and secure fit
  • Inspect wiring harness along its routing for damage, chafing, pinches, or previous repairs
  • Backprobe the sensor connector and check reference voltage and ground with ignition ON
  • Measure signal voltage on both primary and secondary sensor outputs (compare channels)
  • Wiggle test wiring and connectors while monitoring signal to find intermittent faults

Signal parameters

  • Sensor reference supply typically ~5 V (verify exact value from vehicle wiring diagram)
  • Sensor signal voltage normally within ~0.5–4.5 V depending on position; should be present on both redundant channels
  • Low resistance ground connection (near 0 ohms to chassis ground)
  • Continuity: sensor connector to ECU pin should read near 0 ohms (short harness length dependent)
  • Both redundant channels should provide consistent, correlated signals (no large differences)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a compatible scan tool, record C1289 and any related codes, and capture freeze-frame data.
  2. Clear the code and attempt to reproduce the fault with a road or functional test while monitoring live data for the primary and secondary transducer channels.
  3. Visually inspect sensor and module connectors and harness for damage, corrosion, or water ingress. Repair as required.
  4. Backprobe the sensor connector: verify reference voltage, ground, and the presence of a valid signal on both channels with ignition ON and during operation (oscilloscope recommended for dynamic signals).
  5. If one channel shows no signal or an out-of-range value, perform continuity and resistance checks from the sensor pins to the control module pins to isolate open/shorts.
  6. Wiggle the harness and connectors while monitoring signals to identify intermittent faults.
  7. If wiring and connections are good, swap to a known-good sensor (if available) or bench-test the suspect sensor per manufacturer procedure.
  8. If sensor is good, inspect and test the control module input circuits; consult wiring diagrams and consider module replacement only after confirming wiring and sensor integrity.
  9. Check for and apply any manufacturer software updates or calibration procedures. Reprogram/couple sensors if required.
  10. After repairs, clear codes and perform verification test/road test to confirm the fault does not return.

Likely causes

  • Damaged or chafed wiring between sensor and ECU
  • Corroded connector pins at the sensor or module
  • Failed secondary sensor channel while primary channel still working
  • Poor or missing 5 V (or other reference) supply or ground
  • Intermittent connection caused by movement or moisture

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Stored fault: Failure in input of redundant/secondary transducer signal. May illuminate warning lamp and cause reduced functionality of the related control system until the fault is corrected.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 0.5-3.0 hours
