Causes

  • Faulty or intermittent communication on CAN/CAN-FD network between SCC, ABS/ESC, and powertrain ECUs
  • Failed or noisy wheel speed sensors or ABS module data
  • Faulty brake pedal position switch or brake pressure sensor
  • Incorrect or out-of-date SCC/ABS/software calibration
  • Poor ground or power supply to SCC/ABS/ECU
  • Faulty SCC radar or sensor providing invalid vehicle motion data

Symptoms

  • SCC (adaptive cruise) disengages or is unavailable
  • Unexpected braking or lack of expected deceleration control from SCC
  • ABS/ESC or SCC warning lamp illumination on instrument cluster
  • Loss of adaptive cruise features (automatic decel, stop-and-go) or fallback to manual control
  • Diagnostic trouble codes present for multiple related subsystems

What to check

  • Read and record all DTCs and freeze-frame data from SCC, ABS, and powertrain modules
  • Check for U‑codes indicating communication loss (CAN) between modules
  • Visually inspect wiring and connectors at SCC ECU, ABS modulator, brake pedal switch, and grounds
  • Verify brake light operation and brake switch continuity during pedal travel
  • Inspect wheel speed sensor connectors and clean/measure resistance if necessary
  • Check for recent software updates or service procedures that may require ECU reflash

Signal parameters

  • Brake pedal switch: OFF/ON state matching physical pedal position (binary)
  • Brake pressure sensor: rising pressure when pedal depressed (pressure in bar or kPa)
  • Wheel speed sensors: four wheel speeds consistent with each other and vehicle speed (km/h or mph)
  • Longitudinal acceleration (G or m/s²): steady near 0 during coasting, negative during braking; spikes should correlate with brake input
  • SCC deceleration command / requested decel: present when SCC is active; should be within plausible range for vehicle speed
  • CAN bus error counters: message loss, error frames, or bus-off conditions (should be minimal/zero)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve and document all related codes from SCC, ABS, ESC, and powertrain modules. Note freeze-frame data and vehicle state when C1357 set.
  2. Clear codes, then monitor while reproducing the fault conditions (same speed, road grade, traffic) to see if C1357 returns and capture live data.
  3. Inspect connectors, harnesses, and grounds for SCC ECU, ABS modulator, brake switch, and related sensors. Repair any damaged wiring.
  4. Verify brake pedal switch operation and brake light function. Measure switch continuity through full pedal travel.
  5. Monitor live data with a capable scan tool: wheel speeds (all four), brake switch status, brake pressure, longitudinal accel, and SCC decel command. Look for mismatch or implausible values when code sets.
  6. Check CAN network health: verify message presence and no significant error frames between SCC, ABS, and PCM. Repair network faults (terminations, shorts) as found.
  7. If wheel speed or ABS data are inconsistent, test or replace affected wheel speed sensor(s) or repair ABS module connections.
  8. Verify SCC radar/sensors for faults and correct mounting/obstruction. Replace or recalibrate per manufacturer procedure if sensor data are invalid.
  9. If all hardware and signals appear correct, check for available ECU software updates or known service bulletins and reflash/update ECUs as required.
  10. After repair or software update, clear codes and perform road test to confirm the condition is resolved. Re-check for reappearance of C1357 and related codes.

Likely causes

  • Brake switch or brake pressure sensor reporting incorrect status
  • Wheel speed sensor or ABS module producing inconsistent wheel speed data
  • CAN communication errors between SCC and ABS/PCM
  • SCC ECU receiving implausible longitudinal acceleration or deceleration command
  • Software/calibration mismatch after service or update
