Causes

  • Broken or chafed wiring in left rear damper harness
  • Corroded or disconnected electrical connector at left rear damper
  • Failed left rear damper actuator (internal open coil or electronics)
  • Blown fuse or poor power supply to suspension module
  • Faulty suspension control module or internal driver circuit
  • Poor ground connection for suspension system

Symptoms

  • Suspension warning lamp or Service Suspension message on dash
  • Reduced or no adaptive damping at left rear corner (firm/soft ride or uncontrolled bounce)
  • Uneven ride height or vehicle list at rear
  • DTC C1432 stored in suspension control module
  • Clicking/noise or lack of expected damping change when commanding modes

What to check

  • Retrieve freeze frame and full DTC list with diagnostic scanner; note pending/multiple codes
  • Visually inspect left rear damper connector and harness for corrosion, damage, pin push-out or contamination
  • Check related fuses and power distribution for the suspension control module
  • With ignition ON, backprobe damper connector to check for continuity and presence of power/ground
  • Measure resistance across the damper actuator terminals (compare to service manual or expect low-ohm continuity; open = infinite)
  • Use diagnostic tool to command the left rear damper and observe live data/actuation and module output voltage

Signal parameters

  • Actuator continuity: continuity expected (low to moderate ohms) — open circuit = infinite/OL; consult vehicle service data for exact resistance
  • Power supply: battery voltage (~12 V) present at damper connector with ignition ON (if applicable)
  • Command signal: suspension control unit may modulate voltage or ground when commanding damping — diagnostic tool should show command and corresponding change in actuator current or resistance
  • No short to ground: no unintended short between signal/power and chassis ground

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a manufacturer-capable scan tool. Read and record DTCs, freeze frame and live data for suspension module.
  2. Visually inspect left rear damper connector, pins and harness for corrosion, bent pins, water ingress or damage. Repair or clean as needed.
  3. Check related fuses/power feeds to the suspension control module and damper circuit; restore any blown or loose connections.
  4. With ignition ON and battery connected, backprobe the damper connector: verify supply voltage and ground presence per service data.
  5. Measure resistance across damper actuator terminals with connector disconnected. An open reading indicates an internal open — replace damper.
  6. Use the diagnostic tool to command the left rear damper while monitoring the module output and live data. If module commands but no response at the damper, inspect wiring between module and damper for open circuit.
  7. Perform continuity and pin-to-pin harness checks from the damper connector back to the suspension control module (wiggle test to identify intermittent faults).
  8. If wiring and connector are good but no actuator current and module shows no output, verify module power/grounds. If module outputs are faulty, consider module repair/replacement per manufacturer procedures.
  9. After repair or replacement, clear codes, perform relearn/calibration if required by the vehicle, then road test and confirm no recurrence of C1432.

Likely causes

  • Damper connector corroded or unplugged (most common)
  • Broken wire near the wheel or inside the harness (pinch/wear)
  • Failed damper actuator with open coil or internal electronics
  • Blown fuse or loss of battery feed to suspension control

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Left rear shock absorber circuit open — no continuity/response detected from left rear damper actuator. Suspension control has flagged an open circuit.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 0.5-2.0 hours
