Causes

  • Blown fuse or tripped circuit protecting the torque sensor supply
  • Open or shorted wiring between the control module and torque sensor
  • Poor or corroded connector or terminal at the sensor or module
  • Failed torque sensor (internal power supply failure)
  • Faulty control module power output or internal driver
  • Poor ground for the sensor or module

Symptoms

  • Warning lamp illuminated (ABS, VSC, EPS or general warning)
  • Reduced or altered steering assist or stability control intervention
  • Loss of features that depend on torque input (e.g., torque-based shift logic)
  • Intermittent fault codes or recurring C1514 after clearing
  • Possible diagnostic trouble codes related to communication or sensor inputs

What to check

  • Retrieve freeze frame and full DTC list; note any related codes
  • Visually inspect wiring and connectors at the torque sensor and ECU for damage, corrosion or loose pins
  • Check relevant fuses and fusible links for continuity and correct rating
  • Measure supply voltage at sensor connector with key ON (note reference vs battery supply)
  • Measure ground continuity from sensor ground to chassis and ECU ground
  • Backprobing while operating (if safe) to see intermittent voltage drops

Signal parameters

  • Expected sensor supply voltage: commonly a regulated reference (approx. 4.8–5.2 V) or battery feed (approx. 11–14 V) depending on model — verify in factory manual
  • Sensor ground: near 0.0 V with continuity to chassis
  • Sensor output: variable voltage or digital signal that changes with applied torque (exact pattern/model‑specific)
  • Quiescent current: small supply current draw; sudden high current suggests short
  • CAN or LIN messages present for torque sensor if applicable

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a scan tool and confirm C1514 and any related codes. Record freeze frame data and clear codes to see if code returns.
  2. Review vehicle-specific wiring diagram and identify the torque sensor supply pin, ground and signal lines and any inline fuses or relays.
  3. With ignition ON (engine off unless manual requires running), measure the supply voltage at the torque sensor connector. Compare to factory specification (typical ref: ~5 V or battery rail).
  4. Check continuity of the supply and ground wires from the sensor connector to the ECU and chassis ground. Repair any opens or high resistance.
  5. Inspect and service connectors: clean corrosion, repair bent pins, apply dielectric grease, and reseat.
  6. If supply voltage is absent but fuse is good, trace wiring to find open or short to ground/voltage. Repair wiring or connector faults.
  7. If supply voltage present but sensor output is absent/erratic, measure sensor output while turning the steering or applying torque (if applicable) and look for expected change. If output is static or out of range, suspect the sensor.
  8. If wiring and connectors confirm good, swap or bench‑test the torque sensor per factory procedure if replacement units are available, or substitute a known-good sensor if possible.
  9. If replaced sensor still shows C1514 and wiring is confirmed good, test/inspect the control module power driver and associated fuses/relays. Consider ECU testing at a specialist shop.
  10. After repairs, clear codes and perform functional test/road test to confirm the fault does not return.

Likely causes

  • Corroded/loose connector at the torque sensor
  • Open or shorted supply wire to the sensor
  • Blown inline or main fuse for sensor supply
  • Failed torque sensor (internal electronics)
  • Faulty ECU/IC driver (less common)

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Torque sensor power supply fault detected. The control module has identified an abnormal or missing supply to the torque sensor. Systems depending on torque input may be limited.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 1.5-3 hours
