Causes

  • Open or short in CAN_H or CAN_L wiring between gateway and SPAS module
  • Poor connector contact, corrosion or bent pins at SPAS connector or inline junctions
  • Blown fuse or loss of power/ground to the SPAS module
  • Failed SPAS module (internal electronics or software)
  • Missing or incorrect CAN termination resistor(s) or bus wiring routing fault
  • Intermittent wiring damage (chafe, water intrusion) or aftermarket device interfering with CAN bus

Symptoms

  • Parking assist / SPAS unavailable message on instrument cluster
  • Parking assist indicator or warning lamp illuminated
  • System functionality lost or intermittent
  • Related network modules showing communication errors on scan tool
  • No CAN traffic from SPAS when monitored with a scan tool/oscilloscope

What to check

  • Connect a capable scan tool and read all network and body module codes — note any other U/C codes
  • Verify battery voltage and charging system (low voltage can cause communication faults)
  • Visually inspect connectors and wiring at the SPAS module, gateway and nearby junctions for damage, corrosion or water intrusion
  • Check fuses and power/ground circuits for SPAS module
  • Using a multimeter, measure resistance between CAN_H and CAN_L (with ignition off) — expect approx. 60Ω across the bus if two 120Ω terminators present
  • Backprobe or measure CAN_H and CAN_L voltages at the SPAS connector with ignition ON (see signal parameters)

Signal parameters

  • Typical CAN recessive levels: CAN_H ≈ 2.5 V, CAN_L ≈ 2.5 V
  • Typical dominant levels: CAN_H ≈ 3.5 V, CAN_L ≈ 1.5 V
  • Measured differential voltage when active ≈ 2.0 V (dominant)
  • Expected bus termination: two 120 Ω terminators (approximately 60 Ω measured across CAN_H to CAN_L with ignition off)
  • Common bus speeds: 500 kbps (high-speed CAN) or 250 kbps depending on vehicle architecture — verify with service data

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve and record all DTCs and freeze frame data with scan tool; clear codes and attempt to re-create fault to confirm persistence.
  2. Verify vehicle battery voltage is within spec (>12.4 V resting, >13 V with engine running) and check fuses/power to SPAS module.
  3. Inspect visually the SPAS connector and adjacent harness for damage, corrosion, moisture; repair as required.
  4. With ignition ON, backprobe SPAS CAN_H and CAN_L and verify steady recessive voltages (~2.5 V each). If voltages are missing or pulled to rail, isolate power/ground or short condition.
  5. Measure resistance across CAN_H and CAN_L with ignition OFF — expect ~60 Ω. If open or very high, find open; if very low, look for short to ground/power.
  6. Use oscilloscope to verify CAN frames present and valid timing; look for noise, missing frames, or dominant lines stuck.
  7. If wiring and bus integrity are good, swap or bench-test SPAS module if service data allows, or substitute known-good module to confirm module fault.
  8. After repair or replacement, clear codes and test drive or exercise parking assist to verify code does not return. Reprogram or initialize module per manufacturer procedure if replacement performed.

Likely causes

  • Damaged or corroded connector at SPAS
  • Open/short in CAN pair to the SPAS module
  • SPAS module power or ground fault
  • Failed SPAS module
  • Incorrect or missing termination on the CAN bus

Fault status

⚠️ Status
No CAN messages received from SPAS within expected timeout period. SPAS communication lost/unavailable; system functions disabled until communication is restored.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 1.0-2.5 hours
