  • Use a multimeter/oscilloscope to verify the sensor signal while triggering the sensor (hand wave or object)

Signal parameters

  • Reference supply: typically a stable 5 V reference (verify against vehicle data)
  • Ground potential: ≈0 V; good chassis/ECU ground required
  • Sensor output: pulsed/PWM or analog voltage that varies with target distance (should change when object placed near sensor)
  • Continuity: sensor element/coil continuity expected (no open circuit)
  • If available, check waveform on oscilloscope for consistent pulses and amplitude per factory specification

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect an OEM-level scan tool; record C1710 and any related codes, note freeze-frame/live data.
  2. Visually inspect the rear centre sensor, bumper area and connector for damage, debris or water ingress; clean if necessary.
  3. Inspect and secure connector pins; disconnect and check for corrosion, bent pins or moisture.
  4. With ignition ON, back-probe the connector: verify reference supply voltage and ground continuity to chassis/ECU.
  5. Monitor sensor output on the scan tool or oscilloscope while moving an object near the sensor; confirm the signal changes accordingly.
  6. Perform a wiggle test on the harness while monitoring live data to detect intermittent faults.
  7. Check continuity between the sensor connector and the control module; repair any open/shorted wiring.
  8. If wiring and power/ground are good, swap with a known-good identical sensor (if available) or temporarily fit a replacement to confirm diagnosis.
  9. If replacement sensor fixes the fault, install new sensor, clear codes and perform any required calibrations/relearn procedures per service manual.
  10. If fault persists after sensor replacement, inspect/replace the module or pursue module communication/software diagnostics as per manufacturer guidance.
