Causes

  • Damaged wiring harness with insulation breach contacting battery positive or a fused feed
  • Corroded or contaminated connector causing a high-voltage path
  • Failed front probe/sensor with internal short to its power supply
  • Shorted pin at the ECU/module connector
  • Aftermarket accessories or repairs that spliced into the circuit incorrectly
  • Water ingress or mechanical damage to the probe or loom

Symptoms

  • Dashboard warning lamp related to the affected system (ABS/airbag/proximity) illuminated
  • Stored C1745 with possible related codes
  • Affected system may be disabled or operate in limp/fault mode
  • Intermittent or permanent loss of correct front probe readings
  • Possible inability to perform certain adaptive functions or sensor-dependent features

What to check

  • Read all stored codes and freeze-frame data with a compatible scan tool; record related codes
  • Perform a visual inspection of the front probe, connector, and wiring loom for damage, corrosion, or pin deformation
  • Check for aftermarket wiring or recent repairs in the area of the front harness
  • With ignition ON (engine off), measure voltage at the front probe connector signal pin and compare to expected values
  • Disconnect the front probe connector and re-scan to see if the code remains
  • Check for continuity between the signal conductor and battery positive (should not be direct short)

Signal parameters

  • Normal: sensor signal typically a low-voltage signal or pulsed 0–5 V (depending on sensor type) or specific resistance value as per factory data
  • Fault: measured voltage on the sensor signal pin near battery voltage (~11–14 V) with ignition ON indicates short to battery
  • Short to ground would read ~0 V on the signal pin
  • Expected open-circuit resistance varies by sensor; consult manufacturer data for exact ohms

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve all DTCs and freeze frame; note related modules and any other C-codes.
  2. Visually inspect the front probe, connector, and harness for damage, contamination, or water ingress.
  3. With ignition ON (engine off) backprobe the front probe connector and measure the signal pin voltage. A voltage near battery positive confirms a short to battery.
  4. Disconnect the sensor and re-check for voltage on the harness side. If voltage disappears, suspect the sensor or short within the disconnected harness area; if remains, suspect upstream wiring or module.
  5. Perform continuity/resistance checks between the signal conductor and battery positive to confirm direct short. Also check continuity to the module pin.
  6. Wiggle test the harness and connectors while monitoring voltage to find intermittent faults.
  7. If harness or connector damage found, repair or replace the affected section and protect with correct routing and sealing. If sensor is faulty, replace sensor.
  8. If no wiring or sensor fault found, inspect the module connector and test the module power/ground circuits. Repair or replace module only after ruling out wiring and sensor faults.
  9. Clear codes, perform functional tests and test drive to confirm the fault does not return.

Likely causes

  • Connector at the front probe has water corrosion allowing positive battery voltage to bleed onto the signal
  • Pin-to-pin short in the harness where the sensor signal conductor contacts a fused 12V feed
  • Sensor internal failure producing a direct connection to battery positive
  • Module harness routed near auxiliary battery feed and insulation worn through

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Front probe circuit short to battery detected — control module reports an over-voltage on the front probe/sensor input which may disable the related safety/monitoring function.
