Causes

  • Faulty steering angle sensor (SAS)
  • Open, shorted or damaged wiring harness to SAS
  • Corroded, loose or contaminated connector terminals
  • Poor sensor power or ground supply
  • Failed or out‑of‑date ECU/software issue
  • Missing or incorrect sensor calibration (after battery disconnect/repair)

Symptoms

  • ABS/ESC/Traction Control warning lamp(s) illuminated
  • Reduced or disabled stability/traction control or cruise functions
  • Inconsistent or incorrect steering wheel angle reading on scan tool
  • Unexpected or repeated stability control interventions
  • Steering-related fault messages in instrument cluster
  • Vehicle may require steering angle sensor recalibration after repairs

What to check

  • Retrieve DTC(s) and freeze-frame data with a capable scan tool
  • Check for multiple related codes (ABS, ESP, CAN bus)
  • Visually inspect sensor, tone ring and wiring for damage, contamination or looseness
  • Backprobe sensor connector to verify reference voltage, signal and ground
  • Perform wiggle test on wiring to reproduce fault
  • Check vehicle battery and charging system stability

Signal parameters

  • Common reference voltage: ~5 V (varies by manufacturer)
  • Signal output: analog variable 0–5 V OR digital/PWM/sine‑wave depending on sensor type
  • Ground: 0 V (chassis ground)
  • Some systems use CAN/LIN messages to transmit calculated steering angle; verify CAN traffic if applicable
  • Signal should change smoothly and proportionally as steering wheel is rotated (no spikes or dropouts)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Read and record all stored codes and freeze‑frame data. Check for related ABS/ESC/CAN codes.
  2. Clear codes, perform a test drive to see if code returns and note conditions when it sets (hot/cold, bumps, steering angle).
  3. Visually inspect sensor, tone ring/rotor, steering column and connector for damage, corrosion, contamination or loose fasteners.
  4. Verify power and ground at the sensor connector with key on. Compare measured reference voltage to manufacturer spec (typically ~5 V).
  5. Backprobe the signal circuit and rotate the steering wheel while measuring with a multimeter or oscilloscope. Look for smooth, continuous change in voltage or a clean waveform without interruptions.
  6. Wiggle wiring and connectors to check for intermittent faults while observing live data or oscilloscope trace.
  7. If wiring/power/ground are OK but signal is erratic or out of range, replace the steering angle sensor and follow manufacturer procedure for mechanical fitment.
  8. After repair or sensor replacement, perform steering angle sensor recalibration (zero point) with a factory-level scan tool or follow OEM service procedure.
  9. Clear codes and confirm repair with a road test and recheck for stored codes.
  10. If faults persist and wiring and sensor test good, investigate ECU or CAN bus faults and consider ECU reflash or replacement per factory diagnostics.

Likely causes

  • Internal sensor failure
  • Intermittent open/short on signal or power/ground circuits
  • Corroded/poor connector contact at the sensor
  • Missing steering angle sensor calibration after service
  • Damaged tone ring or excessive play at steering column

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Steering angle sensor circuit outside expected range or performance parameters. May disable stability/traction control and require sensor inspection and recalibration.
