Right height front sensor

Causes

  • Failed front right ride-height sensor
  • Damaged or corroded connector or terminals at the sensor
  • Open, shorted or chafed wiring harness between sensor and suspension control module
  • Incorrect sensor mounting or linkage binding (mechanical)
  • Water ingress or contamination of the sensor
  • Faulty suspension control module or software/firmware issue

Symptoms

  • Suspension/air ride warning lamp or message in dash
  • Uneven vehicle ride height or leaning to one side (front right lower/higher)
  • Automatic levelling not functioning or slow to respond
  • Diagnostic trouble code present (C1A04) and possibly related codes
  • Ride quality affected (harsh or bottoming) if leveling disabled

What to check

  • Read stored codes and freeze-frame data with a capable diagnostic tool; note related codes
  • Visually inspect front right height sensor, linkage and mounting for damage or binding
  • Check sensor connector for corrosion, bent pins, water, or loose terminals
  • Measure sensor supply/reference voltage and ground at the connector with ignition on
  • Measure sensor signal voltage while moving suspension by hand (signal should change smoothly)
  • Perform wiggle test on harness while observing live signal for intermittent faults

Signal parameters

  • Reference supply: typically +5 V (check vehicle-specific manual)
  • Signal output: expected variable voltage roughly in the range 0.5 V to 4.5 V depending on ride height
  • Ground: good chassis ground at sensor connector; continuity to vehicle ground < 1 ohm
  • Signal behavior: smooth, continuous change when suspension arm is moved; no sudden drops to 0 V or rails
  • Open-circuit: signal absent or floating; short to ground: near 0 V; short to 12 V or supply: near supply voltage

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Confirm C1A04 is current or stored; record freeze-frame and any additional codes.
  2. Visually inspect the right front height sensor, linkage and connector for damage, corrosion and water entry.
  3. With ignition ON (engine off), backprobe the sensor connector: verify reference supply voltage, ground continuity and measure signal voltage.
  4. Move the suspension arm by hand (or raise/lower vehicle safely on a lift) while watching live signal — verify the signal varies smoothly and within expected range.
  5. Perform a wiggle test on wiring and connector while observing the live signal for intermittent changes or code reappearance.
  6. If supply/ground are OK but signal is out of range or missing, unplug connector and check pin-to-pin continuity back to the suspension control module; repair any open/short faults.
  7. If wiring and connector are good but sensor output is incorrect or non-responsive, replace the right front height sensor and retest.
  8. After repair, clear codes, perform any required suspension relearn/calibration procedure per manufacturer, and road/test to confirm fault does not return.
  9. If fault persists with a known-good sensor and wiring, consider suspension control module diagnosis or software update at dealer level.

Likely causes

  • Corroded/loose sensor connector or terminal (most common)
  • Broken/chafed wiring in harness near wheel or suspension articulation
  • Sensor electrical failure due to water ingress or internal wear
  • Sensor mechanically misaligned or linkage seized

Fault status

⚠️ Status
