ABS wheel speed sensor circuit fault

Causes

  • Open or short in wheel speed sensor wiring (to ground or battery)
  • Failed wheel speed sensor (internal failure)
  • Corroded/loose connector or poor pin contact
  • Damaged or missing tone/ring teeth on the wheel/ABS reluctor
  • Excessive sensor air gap or sensor misalignment
  • Contamination (metal shavings, debris, rust) on sensor or tone ring

Symptoms

  • ABS warning lamp illuminated
  • Traction/Stability control light may also be on
  • ABS may not activate during hard braking (loss of ABS function)
  • Intermittent ABS operation or ABS engaging unexpectedly
  • Speedometer/odometer issues on some vehicles
  • Diagnostic trouble code C1A21 stored in ABS module

What to check

  • Read and record all stored ABS/vehicle speed codes and freeze frame data with a diagnostic scanner
  • Observe live wheel speed sensor data while rotating each wheel (compare left vs right)
  • Visually inspect sensor, connector, and tone ring for damage, corrosion, or debris
  • Check wiring continuity and insulation from the sensor to the ABS module (ohmmeter)
  • Check for short to battery or ground on the sensor circuit (multimeter)
  • Measure sensor resistance (if passive) and AC output or check digital signal (if active) while spinning the wheel

Signal parameters

  • Passive (magnetic/VR) sensor: DC resistance typically ~500–2000 ohms (manufacturer-specific); AC output increases with speed (mV to volts, e.g. 0.1–2 V AC at low speeds)
  • Active (hall/active) sensor: 0–5 V or 0–12 V square wave or variable duty cycle; reference supply typically 5 V or 12 V
  • Typical frequency range: tens to a few hundred Hz depending on vehicle speed and tooth count
  • Expected live data: smooth, proportional wheel speed value matching corresponding wheel and not dropping to 0 or spiking

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a scan tool, note C1A21 and any related ABS codes; record freeze frame and live wheel speed readings. 2) Inspect sensor area: remove wheel and visually inspect sensor tip, tone ring (reluctor), and hub for damage, missing teeth, debris, rust, or excessive air gap. 3) Visually inspect connector and wiring for corrosion, bent pins, breaks, or crushed areas; disconnect and inspect terminals for corrosion or water ingress. 4) With connector disconnected, measure sensor resistance (for passive sensors) and compare to manufacturer spec; open or shorted readings indicate sensor replacement. 5) Spin the wheel by hand or with a jack; measure AC output (passive) with multimeter set to AC mV or view waveform with oscilloscope; active sensors: probe signal line for square wave or reference voltage. 6) Perform a continuity check from the sensor connector to ABS module pins; check for short to ground or battery. 7) While back-probing connector, wiggle harness and rotate the wheel to reproduce intermittent faults; monitor live data for signal dropouts or noise. 8) Repair wiring or connector faults: repair broken wires, clean/replace connectors, secure harness away from heat/edges. 9) If sensor or tone ring damaged, replace sensor and/or repair/replace tone ring. 10) After repairs, clear codes and perform test drive with live data to confirm stable wheel speed signals and that C1A21 does not return. If problem persists after verifying sensor, wiring and tone ring, consider ABS module diagnosis by a specialist.

Likely causes

  • Wiring harness damage at wheel hub (bent, chafed, broken)
  • Connector corrosion or water intrusion at sensor connector
  • Sensor magnet/coil failure from impact or corrosion
  • Tone ring cracked, bent, or coated with metal/ice preventing accurate pickup
  • Connector pins pushed back or shorted to body/axle

Fault status

⚠️ Status
ABS wheel speed sensor circuit fault (C1A21): ABS control unit detected an invalid, missing or out-of-range wheel speed signal. Inspect wheel speed sensor, tone ring, connector, wiring and module ground/power.
