Causes

  • Loose or improperly torqued sensor mounting nut/retaining clip
  • Damaged sensor housing or valve stem (impact or corrosion)
  • Missing or degraded rubber grommet/seal causing sensor movement
  • Sensor removed and not reinstalled or incorrectly installed after tire service
  • Sensor internal fault or depleted battery
  • Wheel change or use of non-compatible sensor/valve assembly

Symptoms

  • TPMS warning or malfunction lamp illuminated
  • No or intermittent tire pressure reading displayed for front left wheel
  • Irregular or fluctuating pressure/temperature readings from front left sensor
  • Slow leak or audible hiss from front left tyre area
  • TPMS learn/initialization failures after tire service

What to check

  • Use a diagnostic scanner that supports Land Rover TPMS to read live data and sensor ID for front left
  • Visually inspect the front left wheel interior for sensor, valve stem, mounting nut, and grommet condition
  • Check wheel and tire history — recent tire service, wheel replacement, or impact
  • Inflate tyre to correct pressure and check for leaks with soapy water around valve and bead
  • Confirm sensor RF transmission strength and battery/voltage if supported by scanner
  • Verify wheel position coding and ensure no ID conflict with other sensors

Signal parameters

  • Sensor ID (unique identifier)
  • Tire pressure (kPa or psi)
  • Tire temperature (°C/°F)
  • Battery voltage or health indicator (if available)
  • RF signal strength (dBm) or transmission quality
  • Transmission frequency (manufacturer-specific, e.g. 315/433 MHz)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a Land Rover-capable diagnostic tool and read all TPMS/BCM codes and live data; record the front left sensor ID and last-seen timestamp.
  2. Visually inspect the wheel interior with the tire deflated if needed (follow safe jacking and wheel removal procedures). Check mounting nut torque, grommet, valve stem, and sensor body for damage or loose fit.
  3. If sensor is physically loose, remove and inspect the valve assembly and grommet; replace damaged grommet/nut or sensor as required and reinstall to specified torque.
  4. Inflate the tyre to manufacturer-specified pressure and apply soapy-water solution to valve base and bead area to identify leaks; repair bead or valve as required.
  5. If the sensor appears intact but not communicating, attempt to interrogate the sensor with a TPMS activation tool. If tool reads data, confirm ID matches stored ID in BCM. If ID mismatch, perform sensor relearn/registration procedure per Land Rover service information.
  6. If sensor battery is low, or sensor is non-responsive to activation, replace the sensor and reprogram/learn the new sensor ID to the vehicle using official procedure.
  7. After repair or replacement, clear codes, perform TPMS relearn (manual or scan-tool assisted), and perform a road test to verify stable readings and that the TPMS warning lamp remains off.
  8. If problem persists after sensor replacement and correct mounting, check BCM/TPMS antenna wiring and connectors for corrosion or damage and inspect for software updates or module faults.

Likely causes

  • Front left sensor not seated correctly in wheel (loose mounting)
  • Damaged valve stem or sensor body from curb/impact/dismounting
  • Sealing grommet or nut missing/damaged causing poor mechanical contact
  • Sensor ID not learned due to service without reprogramming
  • Battery at end of life causing intermittent transmission
