Causes

  • Internal electronic or processor fault inside the SCCM
  • Corrupted or failed module firmware
  • Water ingress or corrosion damaging internal components
  • Over-voltage, thermal stress or physical impact to the module
  • Intermittent or poor power/ground connection to the module

Symptoms

  • Steering wheel controls (audio/cruise) non-functional or intermittent
  • Stalks (indicators/wipers/lighting) operate incorrectly or not at all
  • Steering angle sensor data absent or incorrect — stability/ABS/ESC warnings
  • Instrument cluster or message center displays a steering column/module warning
  • Steering lock or column adjustment inoperative
  • CAN bus related faults or other modules reporting loss of SCCM communication

What to check

  • Read all stored and pending DTCs and freeze-frame data with a dealer-level scanner
  • Attempt to clear codes and re-run to see if fault is persistent or intermittent
  • Visually inspect SCCM connectors for corrosion, bent pins, water ingress and secure fit
  • Check related fuses and relays for continuity and correct operation
  • Measure supply voltage at the SCCM connector (key on) and verify proper ground
  • Check CAN bus presence at module: verify CAN H/L voltages and message traffic with a scope/diagnostic tool

Signal parameters

  • Power supply: nominal ~11–14.5 V with key on; no large voltage drops during operation
  • Ground: low resistance to chassis (typically
  • CAN bus: CAN High/Low idle differential and common-mode within manufacturer spec; module should transmit/receive steering messages
  • Steering angle/position message: present with correct update rate and valid values when steering is moved
  • Wake/sleep signals: module responds to vehicle wake commands and transitions correctly

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a suitable diagnostic tool, record DTCs and freeze-frame. Note occurrence conditions and any related codes.
  2. Attempt to clear the code, perform ignition cycles and exercise steering functions to check for reappearance.
  3. Perform a thorough visual inspection of the SCCM and wiring harness for damage, moisture, corrosion, or connector deformation.
  4. Verify battery voltage and meaningful power/ground at the SCCM connector with key on; wiggle test wiring while monitoring voltage for intermittent faults.
  5. Check fuses and relays related to steering column and electronic modules.
  6. Monitor CAN bus traffic using a scope/scan tool. Confirm the SCCM is present on the bus and is transmitting expected messages (steering angle, switch states).
  7. If communications are absent but power/ground and wiring are good, try a module power-cycle (battery disconnect or fuse removal per service procedure) and re-check.
  8. Check for available software/firmware updates or technical service bulletins; reflash or reprogramme the SCCM when recommended by manufacturer tools.
  9. If internal fault persists after software attempts and wiring/power/CAN are verified good, replacement of the SCCM is usually required. Follow manufacturer procedures for module replacement and mandatory configuration/coding/calibration (steering angle calibration, immobilizer pairing, etc.).
  10. After repair or replacement, clear codes, perform required initializations/calibrations, and road-test to confirm proper operation and no reoccurrence.

Likely causes

  • Failed microcontroller, internal power regulator or memory on the SCCM
  • Damaged or corroded connector pins or wiring to the SCCM
  • Software corruption requiring reflash or update
  • Previous repair or installation damage (pinched wires, incorrect connector seating)
  • Long-term water/moisture exposure or condensation inside column area

Fault status

⚠️ Status
