Causes

  • Blown fuse or relay feeding the actuator circuit
  • Loose, corroded, or disconnected connector at the actuator
  • Damaged wiring harness (open, short to ground, short to battery)
  • Failed actuator motor or internal electronics
  • Faulty control module output or communication error
  • Water ingress or contamination at actuator or connector

Symptoms

  • Rear left function does not operate (no movement or response)
  • Intermittent operation or only partial movement
  • Audible clicking or humming from actuator without movement
  • Related control or status message on dash (depending on system)
  • Other actuators operate normally while RL is affected

What to check

  • Scan vehicle and read freeze frame / occurrence count for C2223
  • Attempt actuator activation from diagnostic tool / vehicle controls and note behavior
  • Inspect fuse(s) and relay(s) for the actuator circuit
  • Visually inspect actuator connector and wiring for corrosion, pin damage, or water ingress
  • Wiggle test wiring harness while operating to reproduce fault (with safety precautions)
  • Check for related codes that indicate communication or module faults

Signal parameters

  • Supply voltage at actuator connector: should be near battery voltage when active (approx. battery level)
  • Ground continuity from actuator ground pin to chassis/vehicle ground
  • Control signal: pulse or variable voltage from control module to actuator (should change when commanded)
  • Motor current: higher draw when actuator is loaded or stalled; near-zero when idle
  • Position/feedback signal (if present): should change as actuator is commanded

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve and record DTC(s) and freeze-frame data with a capable scan tool. Note if code is current or historic.
  2. With ignition on, command the rear left actuator using the scan tool and observe response. Listen for motor noise or clicking.
  3. Inspect the actuator connector for corrosion, bent pins, or water entry. Disconnect and check for continuity between connector and module.
  4. Check relevant fuses and relays; replace if blown and retest. If fuse blows again, suspect short circuit.
  5. Measure supply voltage at the actuator connector while commanding operation. Verify a solid ground and a changing control signal/voltage.
  6. If voltage/ground are correct but actuator does not move, measure motor resistance per service data or check for continuity; remove and bench-test actuator if accessible.
  7. Perform a wiring continuity test from the actuator connector to the control module pins. Repair any opens or shorts found.
  8. Inspect harness routing for chafe points, pinch areas, or water traps and repair or protect wiring as needed.
  9. If wiring and power/ground are good but actuator fails bench test, replace the actuator with OEM-specified unit.
  10. After repair, clear codes, cycle ignition and operate system through several cycles to confirm repair. Re-scan for any reoccurrence.

Likely causes

  • Connector contamination/corrosion at rear left actuator
  • Wiring harness chafed or damaged near rear left door/hatch
  • Actuator motor windings or internal electronics failed
  • Fuse supplying the actuator circuit has blown or poor relay contact
  • Control module output driver fault (less common)

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Rear Left Actuator — electrical fault detected. Possible open/short, poor connection, or actuator failure. Inspect power, ground, connector and actuator operation.
