Causes
- Open or short in wheel speed sensor wiring (to ground or battery)
- Faulty wheel speed sensor (passive or active type)
- Damaged or missing tone/reluctor ring (broken teeth, heavy corrosion, debris)
- Poor connector contact or corrosion at the sensor or ABS module
- ABS module input or internal fault
- Electrical interference or damaged shielding
Symptoms
- ABS warning lamp (and often traction/stability lamp) illuminated
- ABS or traction control may be disabled or operate intermittently
- Erratic or zero wheel speed reading for one wheel on a scan tool
- Possible pulsating brake pedal under some conditions
- Cruise control may be disabled
What to check
- Read stored freeze frame data and full ABS module codes with a capable scan tool
- Compare live wheel speed readings while rolling vehicle (all four wheels should track together)
- Visually inspect sensor, tone ring, and connector for damage, debris, or corrosion
- Check sensor wiring continuity and for shorts to power/ground
- Measure sensor resistance (for passive sensors) and supply/reference voltage (for active sensors)
- Perform a wiggle test on harness while watching live data for intermittent changes
Signal parameters
- Passive (inductive) sensor: AC waveform when wheel turns; amplitude increases with speed (typical small voltages at low speed up to several volts AC at higher speed)
- Active (Hall/VR with electronics) sensor: square/logic waveform referenced to vehicle battery or module supply (often 5V or 12V) with duty cycle ~50%
- Frequency: pulses per wheel rotation determined by tone ring tooth count; frequency increases proportionally with wheel speed
- Expected behavior: clean, consistent pulses without dropouts, amplitude and frequency proportional to wheel speed
Diagnostic algorithm
- Verify the code and note freeze-frame data. Clear codes and attempt to re-create to confirm repeatability.
- Scan live data: monitor all four wheel speeds while slowly rotating/walking the wheel or during a short, controlled drive. Identify the wheel that reads abnormally.
- Visually inspect the suspect sensor, tone ring, and connector. Remove debris, check for damaged or missing teeth, and ensure correct sensor gap and alignment.
- With ignition on (engine off), check reference/supply voltage and ground at the sensor connector for active sensors. For passive sensors, measure resistance across sensor terminals and compare to spec.
- Backprobe connector while rotating the wheel: use a multimeter to check for AC voltage (passive) or use a scope to inspect waveform shape and amplitude.
- Perform continuity test from sensor connector to ABS module pins to rule out harness breaks; check for shorts to battery or chassis ground.
- Wiggle the wire harness through its full travel while observing live data or waveform to detect intermittent faults.
- If tests point to the sensor, swap sensors between wheels (if identical) and see if the fault follows the sensor. If it follows the wiring, repair or replace harness/connector.
- Repair or replace the faulty component (sensor, tone ring, harness, or ABS module) as indicated. After repair, clear codes and test drive to verify proper operation and no recurrence.
Likely causes
- Contaminated or damaged sensor tip (metal shavings, rust, brake dust)
- Sensor air gap too large or misaligned
- Connector pin corrosion or bent pins
- Broken wire in harness near suspension pivot or wheel hub
- Cracked or missing teeth on tone ring
Fault status
Status
ABS/traction control warning lamp set. ABS control module logged a wheel speed sensor circuit range/performance fault. May result in disabled ABS or stability control until issue is resolved.
Repair difficulty: Medium
Diagnostic time: 0.5 - 2.5 hours
