Causes

What to check

  • Scan for C2296 and any other stored/related codes; record freeze-frame and live data
  • Check for recent steering, suspension, or airbag work (calibration may be required)
  • Visually inspect wiring and connector at the steering angle sensor and through the steering column
  • Backprobe sensor connector to verify Vbatt/ignition feed, ground, and signal with key ON
  • Wiggle test harness and connector while watching live sensor output for intermittent changes
  • Measure sensor signal with DMM and/or oscilloscope while turning steering wheel slowly

Signal parameters

  • Supply voltage: typically ignition-switched 9–16 V or 5 V reference depending on design
  • Signal output: analog 0.5–4.5 V or differential dual Hall channels 0–5 V with phase-shifted waveform
  • Zero/center position: specific angle (degrees) transmitted on CAN or shown as 0° in live data after calibration
  • Oscilloscope: smooth, continuous waveform with monotonic change as wheel is rotated; no dropouts or noise spikes
  • CAN data: steering angle message present at regular interval and within expected degree range for wheel position

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Use a scan tool to read and record all codes and live steering angle sensor data (raw angle and status).
  2. Verify ignition and battery voltage to the ABS/ESC module and to the sensor circuit; check for blown fuses.
  3. Visually inspect the sensor, connector, pins, and wiring for damage, corrosion, or water entry. Repair as needed.
  4. Backprobe sensor connector: confirm power, ground, and signal presence. Note voltages at rest and while rotating wheel.
  5. Use an oscilloscope to view the signal while turning the steering wheel slowly. Look for smooth change, correct amplitude, and no noise/dropouts.
  6. Perform a wiggle/steering-column movement test while monitoring live data to find intermittent faults.
  7. Check continuity and resistance of the sensor wiring to the control module; isolate any short to power or ground.
  8. If wiring and connector check good but signal is out of range, replace the steering angle sensor or clock spring (as applicable).
  9. After repair or replacement, perform OEM steering angle sensor calibration/initialization with scan tool per procedure.
  10. Clear codes and road test to confirm fault does not return and stability control systems behave normally.

Likely causes

  • Broken/shorted harness between sensor and ABS/ESC module
  • Loose, bent or corroded connector pins at sensor
  • Sensor internal electronics marginal or failed
  • Clock-spring electrical path worn or damaged (if sensor wiring passes through it)
  • Vehicle recently had steering/suspension work and sensor wasn’t recalibrated
  • Intermittent supply voltage (bad ignition-switched feed or fusible link)
