Causes

  • Faulty steering angle sensor (SAS)
  • Poor electrical connection or damaged wiring at SAS or related modules
  • Corroded or separated connector pins
  • Loss or corruption of reference voltage or ground
  • CAN/communication errors between SAS and ABS/ESC/PSM/ECU modules
  • Incorrect sensor calibration or steering angle offset

Symptoms

  • ABS/ESC/traction control warning lamp illuminated
  • Steering assist may be reduced or operate intermittently (EPS warnings)
  • Steering angle readout does not match physical steering wheel position
  • Cruise control or lane-keeping systems disabled
  • Fault codes logged in ABS/ESC and steering control modules
  • Possible steering wheel angle offset reported after straight-ahead driving

What to check

  • Use a capable scan tool to read C2303 and any related codes and freeze-frame data
  • View live steering angle sensor value while turning wheel and compare to physical wheel movement
  • Check for additional ABS/ESC/PSM/U codes that indicate communication faults
  • Visually inspect SAS connector and wiring for damage, corrosion, moisture, chafing or pin push-out
  • Check battery voltage and vehicle ground integrity while testing (low voltage can corrupt sensor data)
  • Confirm whether SAS has been calibrated or learned after recent battery, steering or suspension work

Signal parameters

  • Supply/reference voltage typically 5 V (check factory spec)
  • Sensor signal voltage often in range ~0.4–4.6 V across full travel for analogue-type sensors (consult service data)
  • Digital SAS will present steering angle over CAN; check message ID, update rate (vehicle-specific, often multiple messages per second)
  • Steering angle value should change smoothly with wheel rotation and return to ~0° when wheels are straight
  • Compare SAS angle to wheel position: difference should be within manufacturer-specified tolerance after calibration

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect OEM-level diagnostic tool, read all stored and pending codes from ABS/ESC/EPS/steering modules and note freeze-frame data
  2. Record live SAS angle and other related sensors (yaw rate, wheel speeds, steering torque) and compare behavior during slow wheel rotation and straight-ahead position
  3. Perform a visual inspection of the SAS connector, wiring in the steering column, and related grounds; repair any chafing, corrosion or damaged pins
  4. Check reference voltage and ground at the SAS connector with a multimeter; backprobe connector while turning wheel to observe stable supply and signal
  5. Wiggle test wiring harness while monitoring live data to identify intermittent faults; inspect for intermittent CAN bus errors
  6. If analogue signal values are outside expected range or noisy, probe with oscilloscope to confirm signal integrity and noise; replace sensor if waveform abnormal
  7. If communication is present but angle value is offset, perform steering angle sensor calibration/initialisation with the diagnostic tool per manufacturer procedure
  8. After repairs or replacement, clear codes, perform SAS calibration, then test drive and verify no recurrence and that ESC/ABS warnings are cleared
  9. If code persists and wiring, supply and grounds are good, replace SAS module and retest; if still present, investigate related control modules (ABS/ESC) for faults or CAN network issues

Likely causes

  • Water ingress or corrosion in SAS connector
  • Broken or shorted wiring in steering column harness (aftermarket accessories common)
  • Failed SAS unit (multi-turn encoder/potentiometer degraded)
  • Uncalibrated or lost sensor data after battery disconnected or steering column work

Fault status

⚠️ Status
C2303 — Steering Angle Sensor: Implausible signal detected. Sensor output is outside expected parameters or inconsistent with other vehicle data.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 1.0-2.0 hours
