Causes

  • Open or shorted solenoid coil in rear supply/exhaust valve
  • Poor connector connection (corrosion, bent pins, water ingress) at valve or ABS module
  • Damaged wiring harness (chafing, broken wires, short to ground/12V)
  • Poor ground or low battery/charging system voltage during operation
  • Faulty ABS/ESC hydraulic control unit (internal driver failure)
  • Internal mechanical failure or seizure of valve (interpreted as electrical fault by controller)

Symptoms

  • ABS, ESC or traction control warning light illuminated
  • Possible loss of ABS/ESC functionality or limited braking control features
  • Brake pedal may feel normal when ABS inactive but ABS events may be unavailable
  • Diagnostic trouble code stored and may set related limp or warning modes

What to check

  • Read ABS/ESC module with an advanced scan tool; record freeze-frame and live data
  • Perform actuator/solenoid output tests from scan tool if supported (command rear supply/exhaust valve ON/OFF)
  • Visually inspect connector and wiring to rear valve and ABS hydraulic unit for corrosion, damage, water entry, or loose pins
  • Measure supply voltage and ground at valve connector with ignition ON and during commanded activation
  • Measure coil resistance of the suspect solenoid and compare to manufacturer specification
  • Check continuity between valve connector and ABS module pins; wiggle harness to reproduce fault

Signal parameters

  • With ignition ON (engine off) expect battery positive at the valve supply terminal (~12 V) and good ground at ground terminal
  • When commanded ON by the module, valve driver should switch and you may see switched voltage or ground (varies by design) — confirm with oscilloscope or lab scope if available
  • Static solenoid coil resistance should be within manufacturer spec (typical solenoid coils often measure in the single to low tens of ohms); an open (OL) or near-zero short indicates failure
  • No large voltage drop between battery and valve connector during activation (

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect an OEM-capable scan tool and read ABS/ESC codes and live data. Note freeze frame conditions (battery voltage, vehicle speed, temperature).
  2. Attempt diagnostic actuator test for rear supply/exhaust valve using scan tool. Observe if the module reports successful activation or a driver fault.
  3. Visually inspect the valve connector and harness for corrosion, water, rodent damage, chafing, and secure terminal pins. Repair any physical damage.
  4. With harness disconnected, measure solenoid coil resistance at the valve connector. Compare to factory spec; replace valve if open or shorted.
  5. With connector connected, backprobe supply and driver terminals. Verify constant battery voltage on supply, and that the module provides the switching signal when commanded. Use a lab scope if available to view pulse/ground behavior.
  6. Check continuity between valve connector and ABS module pins for intermittent shorts or opens. Wiggle harness during monitoring to reproduce fault.
  7. Verify vehicle battery and charging system voltages are healthy. Low system voltage can cause false errors.
  8. If wiring and valve are OK but driver output remains inactive or shows short, suspect ABS module driver fault — follow manufacturer procedures for module testing/repair or replacement.
  9. After repairs, clear codes and perform a road test/exercise ABS to confirm the fault does not return.

Likely causes

  • Corroded/loose connector at rear valve or ABS modulator
  • Wiring damage to rear valve circuit from road debris or repairs
  • Open/short in solenoid coil
  • Controller output transistor or driver failure in ABS module

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Electrical fault detected in rear supply/exhaust valve circuit. ABS/ESC system has limited or disabled hydraulic control until fault is resolved.
