Chassis Control Module Communication Error

Completed

Causes
- Faulty or unresponsive Chassis Control Module
- Broken, shorted or corroded wiring/connectors on CAN high/low or module power/ground
- Blown fuse or faulty power supply/relay to the CCM
- CAN bus short (to battery/ground) or open circuit
- Poor/chafed ground or multiple-ground fault
- Incorrect module programming or firmware mismatch after replacement
Symptoms
- ABS, traction or stability warning lamps illuminated
- Loss or intermittent function of chassis features (electronic parking brake, steering assist, stability control)
- Instrument cluster displays communication or module missing messages
- Scanner reports no communication with CCM or timeouts
- Intermittent/flickering warnings or features working intermittently
What to check
- Read and record all stored and pending DTCs with a capable scan tool (include manufacturer U/C codes). Note freeze frame and occurrence conditions.
- Check battery voltage (key ON, engine OFF) and state of charge; low voltage can cause communication faults.
- Visually inspect CCM connector and harness for corrosion, pin damage, water intrusion or rodent chew.
- Check related fuses and relays for the CCM power feed; verify presence of ignition/switched power at the module.
- Perform wiggle/pressure test on harness and connectors while monitoring bus traffic with a scanner or oscilloscope.
- Measure CAN bus idle voltages at the CCM connector (CAN H and CAN L) and measure bus termination resistance (~60 ohms across H-L).
Signal parameters
- Vehicle battery voltage: 11–14.5 V (key ON/engine running as applicable)
- CAN High (recessive idle): about 2.5 V (typical range 2.0–3.0 V)
- CAN Low (recessive idle): about 2.5 V (typical range 2.0–3.0 V)
- CAN High (dominant): ~3.5 V, CAN Low (dominant): ~1.5 V (differential ~2.0 V)
- Bus termination resistance (CAN H to CAN L with key OFF): ~60 ohms (two 120-ohm terminators in parallel)
- Power/ground resistance to module: preferably
Diagnostic algorithm
- Record all codes and freeze-frame data with a manufacturer-capable scan tool. Note any U-codes indicating network issues.
- Verify battery voltage and system supply. Charge or replace battery if low and retest.
- Inspect CCM connector and harness for damage, corrosion or moisture. Repair any physical faults.
- Check fuses/relays supplying the CCM for continuity and verify supply voltage at the module pins (key ON).
- With key ON (engine OFF), measure CAN H and CAN L at the CCM connector. Confirm idle voltages and that both lines are present.
- Measure resistance between CAN H and CAN L (expect ~60 ohms). If open or shorted, trace wiring for breaks or shorts to ground/battery.
- Use an oscilloscope or bidirectional scan tool to confirm bus traffic and check for noise or dominant faults while exercising vehicle functions.
- Perform a wiggle test on relevant harness sections while watching live data or bus traffic to reproduce fault.
- If wiring and supplies are good, attempt to communicate with CCM using OEM tools. Check module software/calibration version and reflash or reprogram per OEM procedures if required.
- If CCM is confirmed faulty after verifying wiring, power and programming, replace or repair the module per factory service instructions, then clear codes and road test to confirm repair.
- Document repairs and retest for intermittent faults; consider extended road test if fault was intermittent.
Likely causes
- Loose or poor ground/power to the CCM
- Open or short on the CAN high/low wiring near the CCM
- Intermittent connector/corrosion at CCM connector
- Failed CCM requiring repair or replacement
