  • Check for related ABS/ESC or CAN communication codes
  • Verify sensor mechanical mounting and alignment; check for loose fasteners

Signal parameters

  • Reference supply typically 5 V (verify with vehicle-specific data)
  • Ground continuity to chassis ground (low resistance)
  • Analog sensors: output typically varies across 0.5–4.5 V as wheel angle changes (vehicle-specific)
  • Digital/Hall sensors: two-channel A/B square wave outputs or PWM signals; phase shift indicates direction
  • Integrated sensors: steering angle may be transmitted over CAN/LIN (check module messages with a scan tool)
  • Signal should be continuous and stable while rotating steering; no intermittent dropouts or noise spikes

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a professional scan tool and read all steering/ABS/ESC-related modules, record codes and freeze-frame data.
  2. Reproduce the issue if intermittent: perform steering wheel rotations while monitoring live steering angle values and signal channels.
  3. Visually inspect sensor connector and wiring at the column for damage, corrosion, or pin backout. Repair any obvious faults.
  4. Perform a wiggle test of wires and connectors while watching live data; recreate intermittent behavior to locate break.
  5. Verify reference voltage and ground at the sensor connector with key ON. If missing or intermittent, trace and repair supply/ground.
  6. Probe sensor output(s) with an oscilloscope to check for expected waveform (analog voltage sweep or A/B square waves) and to detect noise or dropouts.
  7. If sensor is CAN/LIN enabled, use a bus monitor to confirm the steering angle message is present and consistent. Check for error frames or node dropouts.
  8. Check and repair any corrosion, bent pins, or wiring shorts/opens. Replace damaged harness sections using proper service procedures (protect against future chafe).
  9. If wiring and power/ground are good but signal is still intermittent, replace the steering angle sensor and retest.
  10. After repair or replacement, perform any required steering angle sensor calibration or module relearn procedure per manufacturer instructions.
  11. Clear codes and road-test to confirm the fault does not return; re-scan modules after test.
