Causes
- Internal electronic component failure inside the chassis control module
- Corrupted or failed module firmware/software
- Intermittent or low power supply (battery/ignition) to the module
- Poor ground or high resistance at module ground
- Water intrusion or corrosion at connector or module housing
- Electrostatic discharge (ESD) or voltage spike damage
Symptoms
- Chassis/stability/traction warning lamp(s) illuminated
- Reduced or disabled ABS, traction control, or stability functions
- Erratic or intermittent behavior of chassis-related systems
- Related communication codes (CAN/LIN) or loss of comm with other modules
- DTC present continuously or returns immediately after clearing
- Possible diagnostic tool may show module not responding or limited data
What to check
- Read and record all stored, pending and freeze-frame codes with a capable scan tool
- Check battery voltage and charging system (perform tests with key on/engine running)
- Visually inspect CCM connector and harness for corrosion, bent pins, water, or damage
- Check module ground(s) for good connection and low resistance to chassis
- Verify CAN/LIN bus wiring and termination; check for other modules reporting comm faults
- Attempt to communicate with CCM using factory-level diagnostic tool; note any errors
Signal parameters
- Supply voltage to module: typically ~9–16 V (measure key ON and cranking)
- Module ground resistance:
- CAN bus dominant/recessive voltage levels: ~2.5 V idle; differential 0.5–3.5 V during activity
- Module wake/sleep state and current draw (compare to specification)
- Module response to diagnostic requests: time-to-respond and frame content
- Presence of firmware version, bootloader errors or memory checksum status (if readable)
Diagnostic algorithm
- Connect a scan tool and capture all codes and freeze-frame data. Note any other control modules reporting errors.
- Verify battery state-of-charge and charging system. Recharge or replace battery if low and retest.
- Perform a careful visual inspection of the CCM and connector for moisture, corrosion, damaged pins, or signs of impact.
- Back-probe module power and ground pins. Confirm proper supply voltage with key ON/crank and that ground resistance is low.
- Check CAN/LIN bus continuity and signal quality. Use oscilloscope or lab scope to verify clean bus signals and correct termination.
- If communications are intermittent, wiggle harness and connector while monitoring for changes in codes or communication to isolate wiring faults.
- Review module software/firmware version against manufacturer releases and apply any recommended reflash or updates per factory procedure.
- If the module is responsive but reports internal memory or checksum errors, attempt a controlled module reset or reprogram per manufacturer instructions and re-evaluate.
- If software reflash and wiring checks do not clear the fault and module still reports internal hardware errors, replacement of the CCM and programming to vehicle may be required.
- After repair or replacement, clear codes and perform a full system test, including road test where applicable, to confirm the fault does not return.
Likely causes
- Failed module processor, memory, or power regulation circuit
- Loose, corroded or damaged connector or pin at the CCM
- Stored software error after an unsuccessful update or programming
- Low battery voltage or poor battery connections causing instability
- Moisture ingress causing short or intermittent contacts
Fault status
Status
Chassis Control Module internal fault detected. Module reports internal hardware/software error or memory/processing failure. May require reprogramming or replacement.
Repair difficulty: Hard
Diagnostic time: 1.0-3.5 hours
