Causes

  • Open or short in sensor reference/supply wiring (group 3)
  • Poor or corroded connector(s) at sensor(s) or ECU
  • Failed sensor(s) drawing excessive current or open circuit
  • Faulty ECU/power-supply driver or internal ECU connector fault
  • Intermittent wiring damage from chafing, heat, or pinched harness
  • Low battery/weak charging system affecting reference voltage

Symptoms

  • Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) illuminated
  • Related sensor(s) reporting implausible or out-of-range values in live data
  • Engine may run poorly, stumble, or go into limp mode depending on which sensors are affected
  • Intermittent faults that may change with vibration, temperature, or engine load
  • Multiple sensor-related codes referencing the same supply/voltage rail

What to check

  • Read and record all stored codes and freeze-frame data with a diagnostic scanner
  • Inspect wiring harness and connectors for sensor group 3 for damage, corrosion, or loose pins
  • Backprobe sensor connector(s) and measure reference/supply voltage with ignition ON (engine off) and compare to expected value
  • Monitor live data for the affected sensors while cranking/running to see noise, dropouts, or constant values
  • Wiggle test harness while monitoring voltage/live data to reproduce intermittent faults
  • Check battery voltage and charging system to ensure stable supply (12–14.5 V)

Signal parameters

  • Typical reference/supply voltage: ~5.0 V (±0.25 V) at sensor connector with ignition ON
  • Battery voltage: 12.0–14.5 V (engine running and charging)
  • Short-to-ground indication: supply voltage near 0 V under load or when engine cranks
  • Open-circuit indication: no reference voltage present at sensor connector
  • Expected continuity: low resistance (

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a scan tool, read DF013 and any related codes. Record freeze-frame and live data for affected sensors. 2) Visually inspect sensor(s), connectors and harness for physical damage, corrosion or water ingress. Repair visible damage. 3) With ignition ON (engine off), backprobe the sensor reference/supply pin and verify ~5 V present. If voltage missing or incorrect, proceed. 4) Check battery/charging voltage; if low, charge/test battery and charging system, then retest. 5) If reference voltage absent or unstable, isolate harness: disconnect the sensor plug and measure supply at ECU side of harness. If supply present at ECU but not at sensor plug, repair harness/connector. 6) Check continuity and for shorts between supply and ground/battery using multimeter (power off). Repair any short or open. 7) If wiring and connectors are good and supply out on ECU side is incorrect, perform ECU power/ground checks and consult manufacturer procedures; consider ECU repair or replacement only after confirming external wiring and sensors are functional. 8) After repairs, clear codes and verify the fault does not return and that sensor live data is within expected ranges.

Likely causes

  • Damaged/crimped connector at sensor 3 or its harness splice
  • Wire shorted to ground or battery in sensor supply circuit
  • Corroded pins in ECU connector or sensor plug
  • Failed sensor that has shorted internal electronics
  • ECU internal reference-voltage regulator or driver fault
