Causes

  • Suction control valve (SCV) mechanically stuck or seized

What to check

  • Retrieve and record freeze frame data and all related DTCs with a capable scan tool
  • Visually inspect SCV connector, wiring harness and ground for damage, corrosion or looseness
  • Inspect and replace/inspect primary fuel filter and any pre‑filters; check fuel quality for contamination or water
  • Monitor live data: SCV commanded duty cycle/position and actual fuel rail pressure vs expected
  • Measure SCV coil resistance with meter (compare to manufacturer specification)
  • Backprobe SCV connector to verify supply voltage and ground while cranking and running

Signal parameters

  • Supply voltage: nominal vehicle battery voltage (approximately 9–14 V during cranking/running) to SCV power pin
  • Control signal: PWM duty cycle controlled by ECM — typically 0–100% range (frequency varies by application)
  • Coil resistance: typically a low‑ohm coil (manufacturer specification required) — check for open or short
  • Expected fuel rail pressure response: pressure should change predictably when SCV commanded (refer to vehicle‑specific pressure targets)
  • Response time: SCV should respond within fractions of a second to commanded input (specific timing in service manual)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Read and note all stored/active codes and freeze frame data. Check for related codes (fuel pressure sensor, pump, injectors).
  2. Visually inspect wiring, connector and fuel lines to the SCV. Repair any damaged wiring/connector issues before further testing.
  3. Replace or inspect primary fuel filter and drain water/separation bowls if present; recheck after simple service.
  4. With a scan tool, monitor SCV commanded duty cycle and fuel rail pressure. Command the SCV (active test) and observe whether rail pressure changes as expected.
  5. Measure SCV coil resistance and compare to spec; check supply voltage and ground at the connector while cranking/running.
  6. If electrical commands and supply are correct but valve does not move or rail pressure does not respond, remove and inspect the SCV for contamination, stuck pintle or mechanical seizure. Clean only if allowed by manufacturer; often replacement is recommended.
  7. If SCV replacement is required, follow fuel system depressurization and safe fuel handling procedures. Reinstall, clear codes and perform relearn/bleed procedures if required by manufacturer.
  8. After repair, road test under conditions that previously set the code and verify the code does not return and rail pressure/driveability are normal.
