Charge Air Cooler Coolant Temperature Sensor A Circuit High

Causes

  • Open or high-resistance wiring in the sensor circuit
  • Poor or corroded connector/terminal at the sensor or harness
  • Failed (high resistance) charge air cooler coolant temperature sensor
  • Short to battery/ignition voltage in the sensor signal or supply
  • Faulty ground or reference circuit from the PCM
  • PCM internal fault (rare)

Symptoms

  • Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) illuminated
  • Incorrect charge air cooler coolant temperature reading in live data (very high or out-of-range)
  • Reduced engine power or limp-home mode if system uses this input for boost control
  • Poor driveability, longer warm-up, or abnormal fueling/idle behavior
  • Possible increased boost control activity or turbo protection action

What to check

  • Read and record freeze-frame and live data for the charge air cooler coolant temp sensor
  • Verify battery voltage and key-on power supply to relevant circuits
  • Visually inspect the sensor, connector, and wiring for damage, corrosion, or contamination
  • Backprobe sensor connector and measure signal voltage with key ON and engine running
  • Measure sensor resistance with sensor disconnected and compare to expected values
  • Check continuity to PCM and for shorts to battery or ground

Signal parameters

  • Typical signal voltage range: about 0.2 V (hot/low resistance) to 4.5 V (cold/high resistance); a sustained voltage near battery (~12 V) indicates a short to voltage
  • Expected resistance behavior: high resistance at low temperature, low resistance at high temperature (NTC thermistor behavior). Example ranges for reference only: >1 kΩ cold,
  • Open/high-resistance condition: very high or infinite Ω when measured with sensor removed
  • Short-to-voltage condition: signal voltage close to battery voltage (e.g., >5 V) or does not change with temperature

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a scan tool, confirm P00E1 and review freeze-frame/live data for the sensor reading and related parameters (ambient, coolant temp, intake air temperature, boost).
  2. Inspect sensor connector and harness for corrosion, bent pins, damaged insulation, or coolant contamination. Repair any visible damage.
  3. With ignition ON (engine off), backprobe the sensor signal pin and measure voltage to ground. Compare to expected key-on reference voltage from service data.
  4. Disconnect the sensor and measure sensor resistance across its terminals. Warm or cool the sensor gradually (room temp to warm) and verify resistance changes per expected thermistor curve (consult vehicle data).
  5. Check continuity between the sensor signal wire and the PCM pin. Check for short to battery (signal to +12V) and short to ground.
  6. Check the sensor supply/reference and ground circuits for proper voltage and continuity. Repair any high-resistance grounds or open supplies.
  7. If wiring and connector are good but readings remain out of range, replace the sensor with the correct OEM specification part.
  8. After repairs or replacement, clear codes, perform a test drive, and monitor live data to confirm the fault does not return.
  9. If fault persists after sensor and wiring repair, consider PCM diagnosis or replacement as a last step.

Likely causes

  • Disconnected or damaged sensor connector after recent service
  • Broken/chafed wire where harness flexes or near engine components
  • Corroded pins allowing intermittent high resistance
  • Sensor contaminated with coolant or oil causing failure
  • Aftermarket or incorrect replacement sensor with wrong characteristics
