Causes

What to check

  • Visually inspect sensor connector and wiring for corrosion, damage, or water ingress
  • Backprobe sensor connector and check reference voltage, signal voltage, and ground with ignition on
  • Measure sensor resistance vs. temperature if applicable (compare to reference values if available)
  • Check continuity to the ECM pin and for short to battery or ground

Signal parameters

  • Typical sensor signal range: ~0.1–4.9 V (varies by design); a 'high input' is commonly >4.7 V or flagged as open/high impedance by the ECM
  • Open-circuit condition: very high resistance or infinite ohms between sensor terminals
  • Normal thermistor behavior: resistance changes with temperature (NTC = higher resistance at lower temps, lower resistance at higher temps)
  • Short to 12V: signal near battery voltage (~12 V) or above expected sensor voltage range
  • Short to ground: signal ~0 V (this is the opposite code P0182 for low input)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve freeze frame and live data for fuel temperature, battery voltage and related sensors. Note conditions when code stored.
  2. Perform a visual inspection of the fuel temperature sensor, connector, and wiring (look for corrosion, bent pins, heat damage, chafing).
  3. With ignition ON (engine off), backprobe the sensor connector: verify reference supply (if used), signal voltage and ground presence. Record values.
  4. Disconnect the sensor and measure signal circuit voltage at the connector to check for short to battery (signal present with sensor unplugged indicates short to 12 V).
  5. Measure sensor resistance across its terminals at known ambient temperature and compare to reference chart (or verify it changes when warmed/cooled). An open or infinite reading indicates a failed sensor.
  6. Check continuity from the sensor connector to the ECM pin; look for opens or high resistance and inspect for shorts to other circuits or battery.
  7. Repair any wiring or connector faults found (clean/replace connector, repair harness, protect routing) and retest.
  8. If wiring and connector are good but sensor readings are out of range, replace the fuel temperature sensor and clear codes.
  9. If issue persists after sensor replacement, suspect ECM input failure and consult manufacturer guidance before replacing ECM.
  10. After repairs, clear codes and perform a road/test drive or reproduce conditions to confirm the fault does not return.

  • Disconnected or corroded sensor connector at the fuel rail
  • Damaged wiring harness (chafing, pinched, melted insulation) causing an open or short to 12V
  • Failed thermistor inside the sensor (open-circuit)
  • Faulty ECM input driver (less common)
