Causes

  • Open or damaged wiring between PCM/relay and coolant heater A
  • Corroded or loose connector at heater, relay or PCM
  • Blown fuse or faulty fuse holder
  • Failed coolant heater element (open)
  • Faulty relay or control module driver
  • Poor ground or high resistance ground connection

Symptoms

  • Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) or stored DTC
  • Engine coolant heater does not operate (no heater warm-up)
  • Hard cold starts, longer engine warm-up in cold weather
  • Increased engine emissions or rough cold idle
  • Possible stored related electrical/communication history

What to check

  • Read freeze frame and live data with scan tool; attempt active test to command coolant heater A
  • Visually inspect fuses, relays, wiring harness and connectors for damage or corrosion
  • Check for proper connector mating and evidence of water intrusion or corrosion
  • Measure voltage at heater supply pin with heater commanded ON and OFF
  • Measure continuity/resistance of heater element to verify not open
  • Check ground continuity at heater ground and chassis

Signal parameters

  • Heater supply (when commanded ON): ~battery voltage (approx. 11–14 V)
  • Heater supply (when OFF): ~0 V or open depending on circuit design
  • Heater element resistance: typically low (ohms range); open/infinite indicates failed element (exact value vehicle-specific)
  • Control driver: PCM or relay switching; may be low-side switch to ground (0 V when ON) or relay contact supplying battery when ON — verify against vehicle wiring
  • Expected current draw when ON: several amps (vehicle-specific); absence of current indicates open circuit

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Verify the code and any related codes using a scan tool. Note freeze frame and attempt an active test to command Coolant Heater A ON.
  2. Visually inspect connectors, wiring, fuse and relay for the coolant heater circuit. Repair any broken terminals or corrosion.
  3. With heater commanded ON, measure voltage at the heater supply pin. If battery voltage is present and heater still does not heat, measure heater element resistance. An open (infinite) reading indicates a failed heater element.
  4. If no voltage at heater with command ON, backprobe the relay/PCM control terminal to determine if PCM is commanding and whether the relay is being driven. Check relay coil and contacts; swap with identical relay if available.
  5. Check continuity from the heater connector to the relay and to chassis ground. Repair any open or high-resistance circuits.
  6. If wiring, fuses, relay and heater element test good but no operation, consider PCM driver fault — perform PCM pin-level checks per service manual and consult manufacturer procedures before replacement.
  7. After repairs, clear codes and perform functional test and road/idle test in appropriate conditions to confirm repair.

Likely causes

  • Disconnected or broken harness/connector at heater
  • Open heater element (high/infinite resistance)
  • Blown fuse for heater circuit
  • Stuck or open relay contacts
  • Corrosion or water ingress at connector
