Causes

  • Open circuit or short in the injector wiring harness to cylinder 4
  • Corroded, loose or damaged injector connector at cylinder 4
  • Failed fuel injector (internal open/short or coil failure)
  • Blown fuse or lost 12V feed to injectors
  • Faulty ECM/PCM injector driver for cylinder 4
  • Poor or missing ground for the engine control grounds

Symptoms

  • Check Engine Light (MIL) illuminated
  • Rough idle or misfire on cylinder 4
  • Reduced engine power, hesitation or surging
  • Increased fuel consumption and emissions
  • Possible black smoke (diesel) or uneven exhaust note
  • Code P0204 stored in memory; additional misfire codes may appear

What to check

  • Read freeze-frame and other stored codes; note conditions (RPM, temp, load).
  • Visually inspect injector #4 connector, pins and wiring for damage, corrosion or oil/water intrusion.
  • Check for proper 12V supply to injector harness (key ON) and fuses/relay feeding injectors.
  • Measure injector coil resistance at the connector and compare to factory spec.
  • Backprobe driver signal at connector with key ON/cranking/idle using DMM or oscilloscope.
  • Check continuity between injector connector and ECM pin for opens and shorts to ground/12V.

Signal parameters

  • Injector coil resistance: consult factory spec (typical port fuel injectors ~10–16 Ω high-impedance; low-impedance types ~2–5 Ω). Confirm exact spec before replacement.
  • Injector feed voltage (key ON): battery voltage (approx. 12 V) on the fused feed circuit.
  • Injector driver signal: pulsed ground or pulsed positive (depends on system) from ECM. Voltage will switch between ~0 V and ~12 V during injection.
  • Pulse width: varies with load and RPM; typical port fuel injection pulse widths ~1–8 ms at idle/light load (refer to service data).
  • Open-circuit: infinite resistance; Short-to-ground: near 0 Ω; Short-to-B+ will show continuity to battery voltage at connector.

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve and record codes and freeze-frame data. Check for related misfire or fuel codes.
  2. Visually inspect the injector #4 connector and harness for corrosion, bent pins, melted insulation or oil/water contamination.
  3. With ignition OFF disconnect the injector connector and measure injector coil resistance at the injector leads; compare to spec.
  4. With key ON, verify there is battery voltage at the injector feed circuit (usually present at all injector connectors). Check related fuse/relay.
  5. Backprobe the injector control pin while cranking and/or idling. Using a DMM or oscilloscope verify the ECM is commanding the injector (pulsed signal).
  6. If no command signal from ECM, check continuity from the injector connector control pin back to the ECM pin; look for opens or shorts to battery/ground.
  7. If command present but injector not operating or resistance out of range, swap injector #4 with a known-good injector from another cylinder and observe if code follows the injector.
  8. If swapped injector cures the code, replace the failed injector. If the code follows the wiring, repair or replace the affected harness/connector.
  9. If wiring and injector check good but no ECM driver output (or short at ECM pin), perform ECM bench tests or refer to manufacturer procedures—ECM replacement is last resort.
  10. After repair, clear codes and perform test drive to confirm code does not return and symptoms are resolved.

Likely causes

  • Poor connector contact or corrosion at injector #4
  • Broken/chafed wire in harness to injector #4 (open or short to ground/12V)
  • Failed injector coil in cylinder 4
  • Intermittent wiring fault (pin pushed out, bent pin)
  • Less likely: ECM driver failure

Fault status

⚠️ Status
ECM detected abnormal circuit condition on fuel injector for cylinder 4 (open, short, incorrect resistance, or driver fault). Inspection of the injector, connector, harness and ECM driver is required.
