Causes

  • Open or short in injector wiring harness (cylinder 6)
  • Corroded or loose injector connector or pin
  • Failed fuel injector (electrical coil or internal mechanical failure)
  • Insufficient battery/ignition supply to injector circuit
  • Faulty ECM/engine control driver for injector 6
  • Intermittent wiring damage (chafing, water intrusion)

Symptoms

  • Check Engine Light (MIL) on
  • Rough idle or vibration
  • Misfire felt at idle or under load (often cylinder-specific)
  • Reduced engine power and poor throttle response
  • Reduced fuel economy and higher emissions
  • Possible hard starting or extended cranking

What to check

  • Scan vehicle and confirm P0206 stored; note freeze frame and pending/confirmed status
  • Check for related codes (misfire codes like P0306, supply/PCM codes)
  • Visual inspection of injector 6 connector, wiring and harness routing for damage or corrosion
  • Measure injector coil resistance at the connector and compare to manufacturer spec
  • Backprobe injector connector while cranking/running to verify supply voltage and control signal
  • Verify battery voltage at injector supply (should be ~12V with key on/engine run)

Signal parameters

  • Injector coil resistance: typical gasoline multi-point injectors ~10–16 ohms (some low-impedance types 2–6 ohms). Refer to vehicle service spec for exact value.
  • Supply voltage: battery voltage (~12 V) present at injector positive feed with key ON/engine running
  • Control side: pulsed signal to ground from ECM. Pulse width varies with load (idle pulses often 1–6 ms; under load can exceed 6–12 ms depending on engine and strategy)
  • Typical waveform: sharp transition when ECM switches ground with consistent duty cycle; small rise time and clean square pulses expected
  • No continuous short to ground or constant 0 V on control pin during running (indicates stuck on)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Record freeze-frame data and related codes. Clear the code and attempt to reproduce to confirm it returns.
  2. Visually inspect injector 6 connector, wiring and chassis grounds for obvious damage, corrosion or fluid intrusion.
  3. With ignition OFF, disconnect injector connector and measure injector coil resistance across the two terminals. Compare to spec. Replace injector if out of range or open/shorted.
  4. Reconnect and backprobe harness with key ON and engine cranking/running: verify constant supply voltage (12 V) at the feed terminal and observe the control terminal is being pulsed by the ECM.
  5. Wiggle test wiring and connectors while monitoring live data/oscilloscope to find intermittent opens or shorts.
  6. If control signal absent but supply present, trace continuity from injector connector to ECM pin. Check for shorts to ground/12V. Repair wiring or connector faults as needed.
  7. If wiring and connector check good but injector still fails, swap injector 6 with a known-good injector from another cylinder. If the fault follows the injector, replace the injector.
  8. If the fault stays on cylinder 6 after swapping, suspect ECM driver or internal PCM fault — confirm wiring and grounds again and consider ECM testing/replacement per manufacturer procedures.
  9. After repairs, clear codes and road test to ensure P0206 does not return and related misfire symptoms are resolved.

Likely causes

  • Damaged connector or pin at cylinder 6 injector (corrosion, bent pin)
  • Injector coil open or shorted (internal electrical failure)
  • Broken wire or intermittent short to ground/12V in harness to cylinder 6
  • Failed ECM output transistor for injector 6
  • Poor ground or main relay/fuse supplying injectors

Fault status
