Causes

  • Short to battery voltage on the wastegate solenoid A control circuit
  • Faulty wastegate solenoid (internal short or shorted coil)
  • Corroded or damaged connector pins
  • Open or damaged wiring harness with intermittent contact
  • Poor or missing ground at solenoid or ECM
  • Faulty ECM driver/output transistor

Symptoms

  • Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) / Check Engine Light illuminated
  • Reduced engine power or limp-home mode
  • Poor turbo boost control — possible overboost or underboost
  • Stored related boost/pressure codes or drivability complaints

What to check

  • Read and record freeze-frame and live data with a capable scan tool
  • Visual inspection of wastegate solenoid, connector, and wiring for damage, corrosion, oil or rodent chew
  • Back-probe and measure voltage at the solenoid connector with key ON and engine running when possible
  • Measure coil resistance with harness disconnected
  • Command the solenoid ON/OFF with a scan tool and observe signal/voltage response
  • Inspect/measure ECM connector voltages and grounds

Signal parameters

  • Battery/reference voltage at connector (key ON): ~12–14 V present on the supply terminal
  • Control signal type: typically ECU switches the solenoid to ground; inactive = supply voltage present, active = near 0 V (ground) at control terminal (specific architecture may vary)
  • Typical wastegate solenoid coil resistance (varies by supplier): commonly ~20–60 ohms — check OEM spec
  • When commanded ON by ECU, voltage at control pin should drop toward 0 V (if ground-switched); a sustained high/higher-than-expected voltage indicates a fault

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Record ECU codes, freeze-frame data and any related boost or sensor codes.
  2. Perform a visual inspection of the solenoid assembly, vacuum/boost lines, connector and wiring for damage, corrosion, oil contamination or disconnected hoses.
  3. With ignition OFF, disconnect the solenoid connector and measure coil resistance across the two solenoid terminals. Compare to OEM spec. If coil is shorted or out of spec, replace the solenoid.
  4. Inspect connector pins for corrosion, pushed pins or damage. Repair or replace connector as required.
  5. With harness connected, back-probe the control and supply pins. With key ON (engine OFF) verify supply voltage (battery voltage) and check control pin voltage. Use a scan tool to command the solenoid ON/OFF and confirm the control pin voltage changes as expected (drops toward ground when commanded ON).
  6. If the control pin remains high or exceeds expected voltage when commanded, check for short to battery on the control circuit. Isolate the harness and perform a continuity/short test to battery and ground.
  7. Wiggle test the harness/connector while monitoring voltage to find intermittent faults.
  8. If wiring and solenoid check good, inspect/measure ECM output driver for the channel. If the ECM output is stuck high or shows internal short, consult OEM resources — ECM replacement or repair may be required.
  9. Repair or replace faulty wiring, connector, or solenoid as identified. Clear codes and perform functional test/road test to confirm repair. Re-scan for reappearance.

Likely causes

  • Shorted wire to constant 12 V (pin contact touching 12 V feed)
  • Solenoid coil internal short resulting in atypical voltage reading
  • Corroded connector causing high-resistance/erratic voltage signal
  • ECM switching transistor failed (stuck high output)

Fault status

⚠️ Status
P0246 indicates the ECM has detected a higher-than-expected voltage on the Turbocharger/Supercharger Wastegate Solenoid A circuit. This suggests a wiring short to battery, a faulty solenoid, connector problem, or failed ECM driver. Diagnose wiring, connector, and solenoid before concluding ECM replacement.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
