Causes

  • Open, short or high-resistance wiring/connectors to injection pump B or its actuator
  • Faulty fuel metering actuator/solenoid on injection pump B
  • Faulty fuel rail pressure sensor or other related sensor feeding the ECM
  • Low or inconsistent fuel supply pressure (clogged filter, lift pump failure, air ingress)
  • Internal mechanical failure or wear in injection pump B
  • Poor battery/charging voltage or bad ground at pump/ECM

Symptoms

  • Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) / Check Engine Light on
  • Engine limp mode or reduced power
  • Hard starting, extended cranking or no-start conditions
  • Rough idle, misfire, or uneven running under load
  • Reduced fuel economy and increased smoke/soot from exhaust
  • Intermittent loss of power or surging

What to check

  • Use a diagnostic scan tool: read freeze frame data and all stored codes, including pending codes and related fuel/system codes
  • Compare commanded fuel metering (ECM command) vs actual feedback (rail pressure or actuator response) in live data
  • Inspect connectors, wiring harness and ground for corrosion, damage, or water ingress at injection pump B and ECM
  • Check battery voltage and charging system while cranking and during load; ensure solid ground connections
  • Check fuel supply: condition of fuel filter, presence of air in fuel lines, and fuel lift pump operation
  • Measure fuel rail pressure at idle and under load; observe pressure response to ECM commands

Signal parameters

  • Command signal to metering actuator: typically a PWM/duty-cycle or 0–5V control signal from ECM (0–100% duty)
  • Actuator electrical resistance: verify coil/solenoid resistance per factory spec (check for open/short)
  • Fuel rail pressure target vs actual: pressure should respond proportionally to metering commands (specific psi/bar varies by model)
  • Supply voltage at pump connector: nominal battery voltage (approx. 11–14.5 V while cranking/running)
  • No parasitic short to ground or to permanent 12V on control circuit when actuator is not commanded

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve all codes and freeze frame data with a good scan tool; note related fuel/pressure codes (P0190/P0193/P0087 etc.). Clear codes and attempt to reproduce.
  2. Visually inspect wiring and connectors at injection pump B and ECM; repair any corrosion, crushed wires, or loose pins.
  3. With key on engine off, measure supply voltage and ground at pump connector; record. Check actuator resistance against service values.
  4. Start engine and monitor live data: commanded metering vs rail pressure/feedback. Note if pump B fails to respond to ECM commands or lags.
  5. Use bidirectional control to operate the metering actuator while monitoring fuel pressure and current draw. If actuator does not move or current is out of range, suspect actuator/pump.
  6. Check fuel supply system: replace clogged fuel filter, verify lift pump operation, and bleed air from system if present.
  7. If wiring and fuel supply are good but actuator/pump does not respond, consider replacing the metering actuator or injection pump B. Follow manufacturer procedures for removal, replacement and any required pump/ECM calibration or adaptation.
  8. After repairs, clear codes and perform road test under varying loads; confirm code does not return and performance is normal.

Likely causes

  • Corroded/damaged connector or pin at injection pump B
  • Failed fuel metering solenoid/actuator on pump B
  • Fuel pressure sensor reading inconsistent with commanded metering
  • Contaminated fuel or clogged fuel filter causing erratic metering
  • Internal pump wear causing inability to meet commanded fuel volume

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Fuel metering control for injection pump B out of range/performance. ECM detected that commanded fuel metering and actual response do not match; possible electrical, sensor, fuel supply or pump mechanical fault.
