Cylinder 1 Injector A Circuit High

Causes

  • Short to battery voltage (circuit tied to B+) on injector feed or control wire
  • Poor or corroded connector/terminal at injector
  • Faulty fuel injector (stuck open internally or internal electrical short)
  • Damaged wiring harness (chafing, pinched, broken conductor)
  • Faulty ECM/PCM injector driver (internal short or failed output)
  • Incorrect replacement injector with wrong impedance or wiring

Symptoms

  • Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) illuminated
  • Rough idle or rough running, especially under load
  • Reduced engine power and poor acceleration
  • Possible increased smoke or emissions (diesel) / poor combustion
  • Occasional or consistent misfire on cylinder 1
  • Difficulty starting or extended cranking (in severe cases)

What to check

  • Read and record freeze-frame and pending/confirmed codes with scan tool
  • Visual inspection of injector connector, pins and wiring for corrosion, damage, or loose terminals
  • Backprobe injector connector with a DMM/oscilloscope to monitor voltage while cranking and during commanded injector pulses
  • Measure injector coil resistance (ohms) at ambient temperature and compare to spec
  • Perform wiggle test on harness while monitoring for voltage changes or code appearance
  • Swap injector with another cylinder (if vehicle supports) to see if code follows injector

Signal parameters

  • Normal closed-circuit injector resistance (typically 0.5–3 ohms for diesel solenoid injectors; vary by engine) — check service spec
  • Idle / rest voltage at injector control pin with key ON, engine OFF (reference vs. ground)
  • Voltage at injector during commanded ON pulse (should be low-side switching to ground or pulsed supply depending on design)
  • Pulse width from ECM (milliseconds) correlated with engine speed/load — visible on scope
  • Injector current draw during activation (amps) — abnormal high current may indicate shorted coil
  • Engine speed and load conditions when fault set (freeze-frame data)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve codes and freeze-frame. Confirm P0262 is current or pending. Clear codes and attempt to re-create.
  2. Perform visual inspection of cylinder #1 injector connector, wiring harness, and nearby components for heat damage, rubbing, or pinched wires.
  3. With ignition ON (engine OFF), measure voltage at the injector connector pins to identify an unintended B+ condition. Compare to a known-good cylinder.
  4. Backprobe during cranking/operation with a DMM or scope to observe voltage behavior when the injector is commanded. Look for voltage stuck high or irregular pulses.
  5. Measure injector coil resistance on the bench or at the connector. If resistance is out of spec (very low = short, very high/open = open circuit), replace or bench-test the injector.
  6. Swap the suspect injector with another cylinder's injector (if practical). If the code follows the injector, replace injector. If it stays on cylinder 1, focus on harness/ECM.
  7. Inspect/repair wiring: repair chafed wires, re-pin or replace damaged connectors, ensure good grounds. After repairs, clear codes and road-test.
  8. If wiring and injector check OK and the fault persists, test ECM driver output with an oscilloscope or substitute known-good ECM per shop procedures. Replace ECM only after confirming the driver is faulty.
  9. After repair, clear codes, verify proper operation, and confirm no return of the fault under the same conditions recorded in freeze-frame.

Likely causes

  • Short to constant battery voltage on the injector control wire
  • Corroded/loose connector at cylinder #1 injector
  • Failed injector coil (low resistance or internal short)
  • Damaged harness between injector and ECM
  • Faulty ECM driver (less common, confirm after wiring/injector checks)
