high cylinder injector circuit

Causes

  • Open or high resistance in injector wiring (broken conductor, corroded connector pin)
  • Injector connector damaged, corroded or poorly seated
  • Faulty fuel injector (internal open or shorted coil)
  • Short to battery (B+) on the injector feed or control circuit
  • Short to ground in the circuit
  • Poor or missing ground at the engine harness or injector rail

Symptoms

  • Check Engine Light (MIL) illuminated
  • Rough idle or engine misfire on the affected cylinder
  • Reduced engine power or hesitation under load
  • Increased fuel consumption and emissions
  • Engine may run unevenly, stumble, or go into limp mode
  • Hard starting in some cases

What to check

  • Read and record freeze-frame and all stored DTCs with a capable scan tool
  • Verify vehicle battery voltage and engine grounds prior to testing
  • Visual inspection of injector connector, wiring harness, and nearby components for damage, corrosion, heat damage, or chafing
  • Back-probe injector connector to check supply voltage (B+) and control pulse while cranking/idle using a multimeter or oscilloscope
  • Measure injector coil resistance and compare to manufacturer specification
  • Perform continuity and resistance checks between the injector connector and PCM pin to find opens/shorts

Signal parameters

  • Injector coil resistance: compare to manufacturer spec (typical gasoline injectors may be ~10–16 Ω; many low-impedance or diesel injectors can be ~2–5 Ω)
  • Connector supply voltage (B+): nominal battery voltage ~12–14 V with ignition on
  • Control signal: pulse width in milliseconds (varies with load/RPM) — verify presence of pulses with oscilloscope or scan tool
  • Driver output behavior: typically switches between near B+ and ground or is pulled to ground by PCM; look for clear square-wave pulses
  • Expected idle pulse width: short pulses (ms) — varies by engine; consult service manual
  • PCM reference/ground integrity: low resistance to chassis ground

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a scan tool, retrieve DTCs and freeze-frame data to capture engine state when fault set.
  2. Inspect the suspect injector connector and wiring for corrosion, bent pins, pin-back, melting, or mechanical damage. Repair any obvious issues.
  3. Check battery voltage and main engine grounds to ensure good supply and reference.
  4. With ignition ON (engine off), back-probe the injector connector: verify B+ supply on the feed side and that the PCM control pin is not held at an abnormal voltage.
  5. Measure injector coil resistance with the connector disconnected; compare to specification. Replace injector if out of range.
  6. Command the injector ON using a scan tool (or crank engine) while monitoring the connector with an oscilloscope or noid light to confirm control pulses are present and within expected shape.
  7. Perform continuity/resistance check from injector control pin to the PCM pin to rule out open or short to ground/B+. Repair wiring as necessary.
  8. If fault is intermittent, perform wiggle testing of harness while monitoring live data to reproduce the fault. Repair harness ties, clamps, or routing to prevent chafing.
  9. If all wiring and injector tests are good and the fault persists, suspect PCM driver failure. Confirm by substituting a known-good PCM or using manufacturer-recommended bench tests before replacing the PCM.
  10. After repairs, clear codes, perform functional tests and a test drive to ensure the fault does not return. Re-scan and verify no related codes or misfires remain.

Likely causes

  • Damaged/corroded injector connector or wiring harness
  • Failed injector (open/high resistance)
  • Short to battery on the injector positive feed
  • PCM injector driver fault (less common)

Fault status

⚠️ Status
PCM detected high/open or abnormal level on injector circuit for the specified cylinder. MIL set and freeze-frame data stored. Inspected circuit, injector, connector, and wiring for faults; may require wiring repair, injector replacement or PCM diagnosis.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 1-3 hours
