Causes

  • Backprobe injector connector; measure voltage with key ON, engine OFF and during cranking
  • Measure injector coil resistance with ohmmeter (compare to spec)
  • Use a noid light or lab scope to verify injector drive pulse and waveform at crank/run
  • Check continuity and insulation resistance between injector pin and PCM connector

Signal parameters

  • Key ON, engine OFF: injector supply (battery feed) ≈ battery voltage (~12 V)
  • Injector coil resistance (typical gasoline): ~2–16 Ω (check OEM spec for exact value)
  • Injector driver output: low-side switching; expect near battery voltage at injector pin when driver OFF, and pulled to ground (0–1 V) when pulsed ON
  • Noid light should flash during cranking/run; oscilloscope should show clean pulse waveform (pulse width varies with load/RPM)
  • Short to ground will show near 0 V at injector pin when driver not commanding or abnormal low resistance to ground

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Verify DTC and note freeze-frame data. Check for related codes (misfire, cam/crank, fuel rail).
  2. Perform a careful visual inspection of cylinder 6 injector connector, wiring, and nearby harness for heat, abrasion, corrosion or rodent damage.
  3. With ignition ON (engine OFF) backprobe the injector connector and confirm battery feed and driver signal. Compare to a known-good cylinder.
  4. Measure injector coil resistance at the injector. If out of spec, replace the injector.
  5. Use a noid light or oscilloscope at the connector while cranking/idle to confirm injector drive pulses and waveform shape.
  6. If driver pulses are absent or abnormal but PCM commands signal, check continuity from injector connector to PCM and for shorts to ground or power.
  7. Swap the suspected injector with another cylinder and clear codes; if fault follows injector, replace injector. If it stays on cylinder 6, suspect wiring or PCM.
  8. Inspect and test PCM ground and power feeds; check PCM connector pins for corrosion or bent pins.
  9. If wiring and injector are tested good and short to ground not found, consider PCM driver failure and consult manufacturer procedures before replacing PCM.
  10. After repairs, clear codes and perform a road/test run to confirm the fault does not return and monitor live data.
