Cold Start Fuel Injection Quantity A Lower Than Expected

Causes

  • Restricted fuel supply (clogged filter, weak pump, collapsed hose)
  • Low fuel rail/line pressure or regulator failure
  • Partial or intermittent injector flow or clogged injector(s)
  • Incorrect injector pulse width due to driver/PCM or wiring issue
  • Faulty fuel temperature/fuel composition compensation (sensor or calibration)
  • Intake air metering error (MAF/IAT/ambient temp) causing incorrect commanded quantity

Symptoms

  • Long cranking time or hard starting when engine is cold
  • Rough idle immediately after cold start
  • High crank/no-start in cold ambient temperatures
  • Poor driveability for a short period after start
  • Possible increased emissions or fuel smell if system overcompensates

What to check

  • Read freeze frame and full live data (engine coolant temp, intake temp, ambient temp, crank RPM) for the event
  • Check for additional DTCs (injector circuit codes, fuel pressure codes, MAF/IAT, battery/charging)
  • Inspect fuel system: fuel filter condition, fuel lines, fuel pump operation and inlet for restrictions
  • Visually inspect injector connectors, wiring harness and PCM grounds for corrosion, damage or loose pins
  • Check fuel rail pressure during cranking and immediately after start
  • Check battery voltage and starter draw during cranking (low voltage can affect injector driver performance)

Signal parameters

  • Commanded injector pulse width (ms) during cranking and first seconds after start
  • Measured/inferred delivered injection quantity or injector feedback (mg/stroke or equivalent)
  • Fuel rail pressure (bar or psi) during cranking
  • Engine coolant temperature (°C/°F) and intake air temperature
  • Crank RPM during cranking event
  • MAF sensor (g/s) or MAP, short-term and long-term fuel trims (post-start)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve DTC, freeze frame and related codes; record live data during a cold start attempt
  2. Confirm test conditions replicate ‘cold start’ thresholds (engine and ambient temps per freeze frame) before retest
  3. Visually inspect wiring and connectors for injectors, fuel pump, fuel pressure sensor and relevant sensors (MAF, IAT). Repair any damage or poor connections
  4. Measure fuel rail pressure during cranking and first seconds after start; compare to manufacturer spec. If low, inspect filter, pump, pressure regulator and supply lines
  5. Compare commanded injector pulse width to measured injector flow (if available) or use a noid light/oscilloscope to verify injector driver pulses and coil waveform
  6. If injectors are suspected, perform flow test or balance test (lab or on-vehicle) to identify restricted or low-flow injector(s); clean or replace as required
  7. Check MAF/IAT and other air metering sensors for correct output and response; clean or replace MAF if contaminated
  8. Check fuel temperature sensor and fuel composition compensation inputs; confirm PCM has proper calibrations and no TSB/software update applies
  9. If electrical fault suspected, check PCM power and ground integrity and battery condition; repair as necessary
  10. Clear codes and perform controlled cold-start test to verify repair. If intermittent, consider logging during multiple cold starts or using an oscilloscope/data logger for longer capture

Likely causes

  • Clogged or weak injector(s) reducing delivered fuel during cranking
  • Low fuel pressure at the rail during cranking (pump, filter, regulator)
  • Contaminated fuel or cold fuel viscosity affecting spray pattern
  • Faulty injector driver or wiring causing reduced pulse width
  • Intake air metering error (MAF, IAT) leading to incorrect modelled fuel quantity

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Cold-start measured fuel injection quantity for bank A is lower than the expected value; check fuel supply, injector flow, metering sensors and wiring.
