Causes

  • Faulty or sticking fuel injector (cylinder 5)
  • Injector electrical fault (open, short, poor connection)
  • Incorrect or mismatched replacement injector
  • Low or unstable fuel rail pressure
  • Fuel contamination or varnish inside injector
  • Mechanical issue on cylinder 5 (low compression, valve, head gasket)

Symptoms

  • MIL / check engine lamp illuminated
  • Rough idle or vibration attributable to cylinder 5
  • Intermittent or consistent misfire on cylinder 5
  • Reduced engine performance and acceleration
  • Poor fuel economy
  • Possible hard start or increased emissions

What to check

  • Read freeze frame and live data for fuel trims, injector pulse widths, and misfire counts
  • Check for additional stored codes (misfire, fuel pressure, injector circuit codes)
  • Visual inspection of connector, wiring, and ground for cylinder 5 injector
  • Measure injector resistance at the connector and compare with spec
  • Scan-tool cylinder contribution and balance tests (if available)
  • Measure fuel rail pressure and regulator operation

Signal parameters

  • Injector resistance (ohms) — vehicle-specific (typical range 1–20 Ω depending on type)
  • Injector pulse width (ms) — varies with load/engine speed; compare cylinder 5 to others
  • Injector duty cycle (%) — should be similar across cylinders under equal conditions
  • Short-term and long-term fuel trim (%) — look for large positive/negative values
  • Fuel rail pressure (psi or bar) — compare to manufacturer spec
  • Cylinder contribution or misfire counts — cylinder 5 abnormality

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve all codes and freeze-frame data; record live data (fuel trims, injector pulse, misfires).
  2. Visually inspect the harness and connector at cylinder 5 for corrosion, pin damage, or loose connection; repair as necessary.
  3. Measure injector coil resistance and compare to spec; if out of range, replace injector.
  4. Use a noid light or scope to confirm injector driver is commanding the injector and that waveform amplitude/duty look normal.
  5. Check fuel rail pressure and regulator under key-on and running conditions; address fuel delivery issues.
  6. Perform a compression or leak-down test on cylinder 5 to rule out mechanical causes.
  7. Swap the suspect injector with another cylinder and re-scan: if code/fault moves with the injector, replace the injector; if it remains on cylinder 5, inspect wiring/PCM or mechanical issues.
  8. Clean or replace injector if contaminated and retest. After mechanical/electrical repairs, clear codes and perform a relearn or drive cycle to allow the PCM to re-adapt.
  9. If fault persists after confirming good injector, wiring, fuel pressure, and compression, consider PCM software update or internal injector driver failure and consult manufacturer guidance.

Likely causes

  • Cylinder 5 injector is leaking, partially clogged, or stuck open/closed causing abnormal flow
  • High resistance or intermittent connection in the injector circuit causing incorrect pulse/current
  • Fuel pressure regulator or pump faults causing inconsistent injector operation
  • Cylinder 5 has lower-than-normal compression, causing the PCM to increase injector compensation
  • Aftermarket or incorrect injector installed with different flow rate
  • PCM reached adaptation limit due to long-standing imbalance (requiring repair and relearn/reset)

Fault status

⚠️ Status
PCM has reached the maximum adaptive compensation limit for fuel injector on cylinder 5. Further adaptation is not possible until the underlying injector, fuel, electrical, or mechanical issue is corrected.
