Causes

  • Partially or fully clogged fuel injector (low flow)
  • Injector electrical fault (open/short/high resistance) or poor connector/corrosion
  • Faulty injector driver in the PCM
  • Low or inconsistent fuel rail pressure or failing fuel pump/regulator
  • Air/fuel mixture issues (vacuum leak, intake leak at cylinder 8)
  • Mechanical engine problems on cylinder 8 (low compression, valve issues)

Symptoms

  • Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) illuminated
  • Rough idle or vibration attributable to cylinder 8
  • Misfire on cylinder 8 or increased misfire count
  • Reduced engine power, hesitation or poor acceleration
  • Reduced fuel economy
  • Hard starting in extreme cases

What to check

  • Read freeze frame/fuel trim/learned offset data with a capable scan tool
  • Confirm MIL and retrieve any additional related DTCs (P02xx, P02D*, P0208, P0308, P0268, P0171)
  • Visually inspect injector connector and wiring for damage, corrosion, or poor pin fit
  • Measure fuel rail pressure and inspect for fuel system leaks
  • Measure injector resistance and compare to manufacturer spec
  • Perform active balance/bank/cylinder cut tests if available

Signal parameters

  • Learned injector offset value (Cylinder 8 Injector A)
  • Injector pulse width for cylinder 8 (ms)
  • Short-term and long-term fuel trims (STFT/LTFT)
  • Fuel rail pressure (kPa/psi)
  • Injector coil resistance (ohms) and current draw (A)
  • Injector control voltage (V) at connector

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Verify the code and capture freeze-frame data. Note conditions (RPM, load, temp) when the fault set and any concurrent codes.
  2. Visually inspect the wiring and connector for cylinder 8 injector A: look for chafing, corrosion, bent pins or water ingress. Repair any damage.
  3. With key on engine off, measure injector coil resistance. Compare to spec. Significant deviation suggests a bad injector.
  4. Back-probe the injector connector while cranking/idle to confirm PCM is commanding the injector (control voltage/pulse). If no command, suspect PCM or cam/crank input issues.
  5. Check fuel rail pressure under static and running conditions. Confirm pressure and regulator operation within spec. Low pressure can cause learning to hit min limit.
  6. Use a noid light or oscilloscope to verify injector drive waveform and pulse width consistency vs other cylinders.
  7. Perform an active balance or cylinder contribution test (using scan tool) to compare cylinder 8 correction/offset with other cylinders. Note relative differences.
  8. If electrical control and fuel pressure are good, perform a fuel injector flow/volume test or swap cylinder 8 injector with another cylinder of known-good condition and clear codes. If fault follows injector, replace injector.
  9. If fault remains after swapping injectors, suspect wiring harness or PCM driver. Wiggle test wiring under load, check for intermittent opens/shorts, repair as needed.
  10. If mechanical fault suspected (compression leak, valve, piston), perform compression and/or leak-down test on cylinder 8 and repair as required.
  11. After repairs, clear codes and perform a road or diagnostic drive cycle to allow injector offset relearn. Recheck for recurrence.
  12. If all hardware checks pass and offsets still hit limits, check for PCM software updates or reflash/replace PCM as specified by manufacturer.

Likely causes

  • Clogged or restricted injector for cylinder 8
  • Poor electrical connection at injector harness (corrosion/damage)
  • Fuel pressure low or fluctuating
  • Injector driver fault in PCM (less common than wiring/injector problems)
